go to the joe morello part of the main website and watch the 'killer' exercise. Then practice it much slower than he does.
also explorethe whole of the vic firth site and of course the drummerworld clinic section.

Then get Master Studies by Joe Morello

I respectfully disagree with the below suggestion. There is a reason Morello's book is called "Master" studies, and the reason is that the book accentuates and develops free stroke, Moeller, and stick height skills which take years to develop. The Stone Killer is a perfect example of a black belt exercise whose potential is not realized by a beginner.
First thing I would do is get a teacher. You are just starting, get under the wing of someone experienced and let him take you through the beginning stages. If you are interested in hand technique, I suggest you look at some basic hand movement, like the free stroke. This will serve you through your entire drumming career, literally enhancing every stroke. Dom Famularo has excellent videos showing just that. Take a look!
Hope this helps. I welcome you to the drumming community! DPS

yes. i was referring to only the one specific exercise joe does under the video titled 'kiiler' on DW. the majority of morello is not for the newby.
i meant only the top exercise here:

I've been playing for a long time on and off, a lot of long offs, but I have a pretty strong vocabulary with drums, and am back at it stronger then ever before...I read your post, and was very intrigued by the advice you offered after checking out. It's a really basic piece, but taken from either direction, as a beginner or seasoned player, it's a sound chunk of advice. I'll be trying this for the next few weeks, just to see what happens. I'd like to think I can get the second lesson going rather strong too...should be quite interesting.
As Nutha mentioned(heres a more detailed version I provided)
Check out www.vicfirth.com and go to the Education section, theres loads of video's and exersises available.
(Focus on using your wrist with very little or no finger use at least for a week or so, Just so you can build your wrist to be more flexible to accept rebound later on. Acommon mistake is to skip the wrist and eventually YOU WILL PAY!)
set your metronome at around 60-80bpm
and practice practice practice(if you have a mirror sit in front to check your hands out)

Try to pick up George L. Stone's book "Stick control"
Browse around theres TONS of info on vic firth.
