View Full Version : saluda's new stuff
between school, track and building my set, and winning my 21'' sabian RBD ride, i havent really checked in with saluda. Im in the market for a new crash and few splashes maybe a new china and i was wondering if anyone had heard anything new from them.
I saw that they have two new lines the Ion, and definitive jazz, but i couldnt find any information, and that the hybrid X line has been morphed into all vented cymbals.
so here are my questions WHAT is the purpose of vented cymbals? anyone know about these new lines, and i havent been on DW for a while so has anyone got any new saluda stuff lately?

I think there's a few people on here that have something from the new Saluda lines. One was a Definitive Jazz flat ride (I think), but I don't remember the other one. I'll just let them respond.
The vented option just gives it a trashier sound, I don't really know how to describe it. Cymbalsonly.com has some vented sabians (the HHX O-zones) if you want an idea of how the might sound.
thanks im thinking about getting a flat ride some time soon. I guess I'll just have to wait and just check out the your gear section. does anyone know anything about the new lines?

Hi Dom,
I believe [Jamie wouldn't tell me what it is except for that it was a prototype] that I have an Ion 18 crash that Jamie sent me to replace one of my 18's because we just coulnd't get it dialed in. WOW ....bright, but not too bright,....smooth, shimmering but with finesse and a touch of color!! It's really nice! I'd definately look there for a possible crash and/or splash!!!
Maybe try a vented crash for something different instead of a china!
Not sure on the definitive jazz series,....but it'll probably be a pure "jazz" lineup which will be really nice for Saluda!
Vented ? Jamie made me a splash, vented it, and hammered it so it was inside out, ...like a china, ... but without the flange......[ can you see it?!] :-) Venting a cymbal makes more air pass thru and around it when struck...giving it a trashier sound....
Anyhow....sounds like a mini china...but has splash characteristics if that makes sense!
Stay tuned...Jamie will be updating the site this week I think with info and pictures ....someone else on here has a prototype and it's lathed and hammered but it's done in "strips" around the cymbal....very cool looking........hopefully he'll have it updated sooner than later!
sweet im just gunna search the your gear section to get back in the saluda groove. Not really on topic but does anyone know how to get one of the banners from their webiste?
i want to put one on my myspace.

Just got my new hats in today.. I'm still at work and haven't had a chance to play them yet. Jamie switched up the original order a bit since apparently they couldn't get the sound I wanted with the earthworks series. I dig the aged look. Just so you know on the inside of the cymbals they're shiny and lathed.
Special thanks to my coworker for holding them whilst I took the picture... lol
When I get home we'll see if Jamie can make me a convert.

Nope... Just the Saluda log top and bottom. Bottom cymbal is 1109 grams and the top is 943. I'm not outta here until 8pm (eastern) so I won't be able to tell you how they sound for a while.
wow those are probably black mist hats right? they look great! I hope you like them as much as i love mine

A quote from Jamie:
Instead, we did a true Black Mist bottom, smoothed down slightly and
then coated in the Earthworks finish. Then the bottom hat is a Glory
with the Earthworks finish.
So basically they did the acid washed finish over the Black Mist and Glory ones to give it the aged look.
they look sweet! have you got to try them out yet????

Just played them for a few seconds last night.. haven't had a chance to put my kit back together after being in the studio. I'm reserving judgement until I have them with the kit since it's such a change from the sound I have now.

I like what Jamie does. If your specific "order" doesn't come out right 'sound-wise' ...he'll find the sound you're looking for with something else!
So,..you say it's a change from what you have now .....what do you have now and what did you want?
REMEMBER: Hi hats will take some getting used to! MY Hi hats where the biggest thing that took me getting used to .......but now, I love them!!

Amen Brother!! :-)
Oh yeah....BIG CHANGE for you !! Totally different sound spectrum!
I know, it's tough...I went from Zildjian 13" K/Z's to 14" Mist Brillian/Mist X wavy bottoms and that was a BIG change for me....
I can't imagine doing what you're doing!! :-) But if that is the sound you asked for....you WILL like them!!

I had used vintage 15" Zildjian (equivalent to As) hats for about ten years before getting my Saluda 14" MistX hats. It was definitely different, but I think the MistX and As are slightly similar in sound. I love my new hats. They have a more defined chick than my Zildjians (also a little lighter and much cleaner), but still put out the great wall of sound I loved when riding my open hat with the Zildjians.

Well like I said... I decided not to trade in my Paistes and to just buy the Saluda and see how they go. If I like them I'll consider selling my Paistes and if I don't like them I'll either ask Jamie to take them back or sell them. The sound I was going for was a Paiste Dark Energy sound but I'm not sure if they're quite there. We'll see this weekend. I'm going to try and get back into the studio to record my new snare when it gets here so when I go I'll get these recorded as well. I didn't want to jump to conclusions sound wise because like you said... hihats take some getting used to. These are a bit trashier than what I'm playing now and when I've gone to stores and played other hihats I didn't like them right away either, even other Signature lines.
i talked to jamie. I emailed him last night and he got back to me today. Im looking for a splash and he said the ion would be my best bet. Said the are full toned, and paiste ish. So im looking forward to it, paistes rule!
he said the definitive jazz are going to be larger thin low volume stuff
i love saluda

Hey Dom, did Jamie give any word on when the Ion and Jazz series links would be up on saluda's site? I can't wait to see these and if I get a new job soon, I might buy something from both of these series.
Just a side note: I recently traded in my 18" Sabian AA Fast China for one of their 18" Diamond chinas. I'd have to say the Diamond is one of, if not the best, chinas I've heard. It's so dark and complex, but has a trashy bite that makes it jump out.
If anyone's interested, here's the link for the Sabian I traded in: http://cgi.ebay.com/18-SABIAN-AA-FAST-CHINA-BOY-CYMBAL-VERY-NICE-THIN_W0QQitemZ150116611179QQihZ005QQcategoryZ10174 QQcmdZViewItem
no he didnt say anything about when they would be up on the site. I did ask about how the ion looks. When he gets back to me i will let you know.
ok i got my email from jamie today. so this is what he said
They look more like Paiste's Dark Energy series on top but not as dark and they look similar to Turk cymbals, but not as dark. Some have a brilliant finish on them but they are a rough version of the brilliant finish on the Mist X's.
I hope that helps. We should have the Ion series up on our site shortly.
it helped me get an idea what they look like hey how are you likeing your hats crazyhorse, its off topic but i love that stave you got too!

They're a little trashy when they're open but the chick and closed sound is great. I had to push my studio time back again since PBS decided to throw them a big project and they only had a couple of days to get the mixing down, etc. Guess I can't complain though since it is free time...

Picked up a 10" splash yesterday while I was down there meeting the guys. Pretty darn good sounding.
Oh.. they had a few Mist X's in brilliant finish that were apparently going out to an endorser. These are the first ones I've hit that INSTANTLY made me fall in love. They sound almost identical to my Paiste Signatures. Crisp.. clean.. and beautiful. Think I found out which ones I'll be buying from now on.

but brilliant finishes are lonely. I want a finish like the bosphorus traditionals (those are the ones with the two different types of lathing correct?) But i still want the sound of the a custom.
crazyhorse
05-10-2007, 05:44 PM
... The finish dictates the sound... Bosphorous are very dry sounding because of the finish. That "aged" finish gives the K cymbals their distinct sound where the polished finish is why A's sound like they do. So, if you're picking your cymbals based on sound, you're stuck. If you just want looks.. well.. go the Dark Mist route.

Dom,
The splash I got is an Ion according to jamie.. though it wasn't the lathed/unlathed series we thought was the Ions... It's kind of an aged finish actually. Sounds good with my sigs from the little I've played it. Was messing around yesterday with it since I got my Axis double pedal (after waiting 2 months) in as well

Then you don't want Saluda, you want a Bosphorus Gold crash. It's a brilliant finish, but it looks very similar to a traditional finish once it's aged. And I'm not trying to rag on Saluda, but in my own opinion, their cymbals don't compare to Bosphorus, other than the fact that they're both circular.

The MistX series is very nice. Very bright and shimmery. Most of my collection is MistX. I get my 18" MistX crash back tomorrow... woo! I think the MistX series sounds similar to the Zildjian A series. I made that by comparing a few audio samples from the Cymbal Cellar to my cymbals, based on size and weight. Tomorrow I will also be getting my new 20" Glory Heavy Dry ride, which is unlathed with a raw finish. I can't wait to hear what it sounds like.

Back off my crash! Ahh It's been tainted... haha I've been waiting for it to return! That is my main crash. I love it. Eventually I want to get an 18" Diamond crash to go with it. The Diamond and MistX series go really well together I think. I have a 16" Diamond crash now that goes great with that 18" MistX crash. Maybe next run I'll get that 18" Diamond, and a mini china.
I can't wait to hear that Glory. Since he had my crash, I'm hoping he found a Glory that goes with it well. I think the only thing I haven't liked so far was the 16" Earthworks heavy crash (with brilliant finish). I really liked the recordings of an Earthworks ride I heard though, so ya never know.

Are you talking about my splash? I love it. It's the first splash I've ever owned. It's very thin. It has a bit of a gongy kind of sound, mixed with what you would typically associate with a splash. A rather quick decay, but has a very nice tone.
I think it is similar to Fussion's crash, but I think there is a difference with the lathing... I don't remember. I was told it was a prototype- maybe what led to the Ions? I would love a crash or two like that splash. I would probably get them in odd sizes like 15 and 17 and use them for accents. Of course, I have no idea where I would have room to add two more crashes to my setup... once I get my next 18 crash the sky will be pretty full.
