I have a ride cymbal given to me by an eBay seller who couldn't sell it and who gave it to me as I bought another item from him.
It has 'Manhattan' written on it, so i think it's a Sabian HHX Manhattan jazz ride, but the seller measured it and it was about 17 3/4 inch. I don't know what happened to it, maybe it was cut down. What, why and how? Any suggestions? Thanks.

Maybe it is not an HHX Manhattan Ride...maybe it is a Manhattan 18" crash and he just measured a bit unexact? Can you show us some pics of it maybe?
If not: How is the hammering? Is the hammering typical for the HHX? Big hammers?

HHX look like they were hammered with thumbs.

Hi,
before the Manhattan Cymbals were intergrated into the HHX-Line, there was a 18" Manhattan Bridge Ride AFAIK. So the mentioned cymbal could be one of these.
Have to look it up.

I'm going to re-measure and take pics in a bit... so we'll see the pics here. There's not much hammering at all.

sorry I was mistaken.
My 1999 SABIAN Cat. lists the Manhattans in the HH line.
There was a Ride in 18",20",22" and the Bridge Ride in 16".

Pictures are here, I measured it and it is pretty much 17 3/4 inch, just under 18". I think it could have been cut down due to damage, as the 'Manhattan' logo is lower than the pictures I've seen. The 20" version of this cymbal that they still manufacture can be seen here somewhere...

It still sounds good, so I don't know whether it was cut down or not. The bell looks too large for an 18" crash of this series.

Okay, it is not an HHX Manhattan. There is no hammering...I see just a lathed cymbal. Doesn`t look like something expencive...but if you like the sound it is cool!!
have fun with it!

...at least that's less confusing.
Cheers Karl, I'll see exactly what it is, the guy who sold it insisted it was Sabian - but good observation.

if it's sabian it'll be engraved/ stamped into the cymbal somewhere... have a look around and see if you can see anything that proves it's sabian.

Wow-that's a wierd looking pie...never seen lettering like that before. Like a_beast said, if it is a Sabian, it will have a stamp pressed into it somewhere. If it has been "trimmed", they did a damn good job, as the edge looks very round and true. Also, as Karl has pointed out , HHX Manhattan rides have very distinct (and large) hammer marks on them...
