remO's - the solution....

Hello.

Ive got some sessions coming up, and I was trying to think up a way of muffling a snare for a funky tight sound, but I didnt want to smother my heads in tape.

I was looking into getting some Remo remO's, but when I saw the price, I almost collapsed....

So, I decided to go it alone - fijjibo style!!!


Get yourself some thin cardboard, use an old head to draw around, but a head one inch less than your snare diameter, or alternatively, use a compass.
Cut it out, then cut out a smaller circle inside - SIMPLE!!!

They wont fall of the head, dont need glue, and sound great.
I wont be using it all the time, but if I need a dry funky sound, I have it in my snare case....

I prefer moongel. Rings tend to rattle and buzz. Even better is getting thicker heads (top and bottom if needed) and sound proofing your room. ;-)

Thanks, but I think you misunderstand -

I made these for a studio gig, where we wanted a dry muffled snare sound.

The drums sound fine on their own, this was just what the session required.

And because they are thick and heavier than plastic rings, they dont rattle.

I use appropriately cut old heads for that. Cardboard seems a bit overkill... :)

You think that looks better than tape? You should have just taken your wallet out of your pocket and thrown that on your snare.

Wavelength - Ive done that in the past, but I didnt have any to hand, plus they rattle.

bighaibigdrums - yep, ive done that in the past aswell, but I wanted a different sound, plus I didnt have my wallet with me.....
and I didnt say it looked better than tape, tape peels the coating of remo heads.

Lol, no, that would take the coating off.....

I feel I must stress again that this was a temporary studio solution.

I dont have much money, or a drum store nearby, I just wanted to create a sound that was right for the session.

All of your suggestions are usefull, and normally I would use them, but sometimes youve got to take a leaf from Steve Gadds book, and go with what ther client wants.
