Hi there!

For those who saw my thread about new crashes I finally chose a Sabian 16" AAXplosion crash and a AAX 16" Stage crash. I am very happy with them! So thanks again to any of you who helped out. I also ordered an 8" tom to go with my kit. I just got it all today and spent some time changing the heads and setting up. I feel like spending 24/24h on the drums right now!

In the attachments you'll first see a picture of my old setup followed by the new configuration.

Regards,
Chrisotpher.

How do the EC2s sound on those toms, I'm looking at some new heads and happen to have the same set. Yay or nay? Nice setup, I'd like to see it with the extra toms on it though too.

Hello!

The picture is fooling - they look very high, but the crashes are actually at about nose hight.

I've only put the EC2s on yesterday. I did a rough tunning and I have left them to seat over night. I will be fine tunning today and I'll see how that work out. I'll get back to you on this. The only thing that sucks though is that I made a mistake in my order and ended up with a coated 14" EC2s. But I'll bear with that.

About the extra toms, those are a 12"x9" tom-tom and a 16"x16" floor tom. I also have another 22"x17" kick in the Hardcase you can see in the background. I am thinking about selling those as a kit. The kit I have put up here will be my kit for gigging with my band (the link in my signature.)

Christopher.

Drummer30,

So I spent some hours playing around with the tunning and in my opinion EC2s are nay for Stage Customs.

They are said to be easy to tune, but I personally found them difficult to handle because of the control ring dampening the harmonics - it was harder for me to hear the overtones when tapping with my finger near each tunning rod.

Overall, I could not get a sound that I like out of these heads. The attack and sound is nice, but lack too much sustain for my tastes (on my kit at least) I like it when you get that "AAAooommmmm" after the decay. So in the end I just got rid of them and put on some other heads.

I think EC2s are like Remo Pinstripes, not in terms of sound, but in the sens that, they seems to be heads that give better results on high end kits than entry or mid range drums.

Here are EC2s on a high end kit:

are you a jose pasillas fan at all?

Tetely,

I can't say I am a fan of Jose. However, I do listen to Incubus' music now and then. If you are saying that in relation to the way I have set my drums up, I was not inspired at all by his kit.

If anyone is interested in the specs...

Cymbals:
- 13" AA Fusion hats
- 8" AAX splash
- 10" AA splash
- 16" AAX Stage crash
- 16" AAXplosion crash
- 20" AA Medium ride
- 17" AAXtreme china
- 14" AA Regular hats

Not shown:
- AA 18" Medium crash
- AA 18" Medium-Thin crash

Shells (Yamaha SCN):
- 8" x 7" tom-tom
- 10" x 8" tom-tom
- 14" x 12" tom-tom
- 22" x 17" kick drum

- 14" x 5" signature Steve Gadd snare (1998 maple version)

Not shown:
- 12" x 9" tom-tom
- 16" x 16" floor tom
- 22" x 17" kick drum

Voilà!

Regards,
Christopher.

Wow, j`adore ca! C`est un tres joli batterie. lol
Congrats...man, I like both set-up.

But I have a question: What is the reason for having the small rack tom on the right, and not as usual on the left?

Guten Tag Karl!

To explain the inverted toms. Many years ago, I went to drum class, and the guy from the previous session who used the kit I was going to play on was left handed. So obviously, I had to switch everything back around. The thing was, the teacher was running a bit late, so I did not have enough time to invert the two tom-toms and therefore I had no choice but to play with the toms inverted. I actually found it quite interesting to play like that and decided to try it when I got home. The same day I found out, after some research, that drummers like Virgil Donati, Kenny Aronoff and some others do the same thing - I thought I'll stick with that setup to see what I could make out of it.

Nothing magic happens by setting the kit up like that - obviously you are limited to your own capacities - but, although you could see it as a basic four piece rock setup with an extra 10" tom between the 12" and the 16", you do tend to think a bit differently and try some other things with such a simple modification.

Christopher.

Hey man,

Really cool looking kit! I was wondering how old those cymbals were. I know they sound fine, but they seem to have lacked some luster. Looks like a blast to play.

Hi there!

The two crashes are brand new, the rest of the cymbals vary in age from two to four years, except my main hats. I bought these Fusion hats from a teacher at my drum school. They are pretty old but sound great and moreover I got them for a very good price.

I don't often clean my cymbals. I do wipe off the dust frequently, and once or twice a year clean them with cymbal cleaner. That's all. I don't want to mess around with them too much.

Oh and by the way, cool avatar!

Thanks for the answer, I was debating between those and the EC1s, so i would guess that the 1 plys will be better, especially since they will give more resonance. I currently have some ebony ps on my kit and wanted something a bit brighter and more open for a change, so I think the EC1s will do the trick. Now coated or clear, what should I go for there?

Drummer30,

I am happy to have helped! The EC1s look interesting, I will get around to trying them on my kit at one point. So far I have found best results with G1s or G2s on my SCN.

I've attached a little excerpt of my drum track from one of my band's songs. It's nothing much, but I play a simple fill on the toms before the verse starts and you can clearly hear the toms, so you can hear the kind* of sound you can get with G2s on SCNs.

Regards,
Christopher.

*This is a homemade recording for our demo CD. Although there is no heavy engineering involved, the sound of the drums have been slightly processed.

Thanks again DrumHead,

Were those the G1s or G2s in that recording. I really liked the sound they gave there, so these heads are definitely fair game in my decision. What would you expect would be different between the EC1s and these heads? I'm fairly new to the head business so your advice is greatly appreciated.

In the recording those are Evans G2s over G1s. I get many compliments about the sound of my drums - which I never understood because I am not a specialist when it comes to tunning! - but you must take into account that I did spend many hours tuning my toms for the recording session to get that sound. So be prepared to have a lot of patience! lol. I found the Drum Tunning Bible (home.earthlink.net/~prof.sound) to be a lot of help.

Concerning how the EC1s might sound compared to these heads, I'm not sure really. I can only refer to the Evans sound reference chart they have on their website for that. Since there are many variables (one being the drum kit one has, the other being ones taste and perception of sound) the only solution is to go try them out.

If I get the EC1s before you, I'll drop you a line to tell you what I thought of them.

Regards,
Christopher.

Alright thanks again, my drum teacher suggested the G2 over G1 combo a while back, so I think I'll try them out. Wouldn't doubt that you'll get the EC1s first, I think my pocketbook is hurting a little lately. Thanks for all the advice and hope to hear from you!
