i currently own 14" A mastersounds and have noticed they are the complete opposite of what i want. i want nice dark hats, i'm looking at paiste dark crisps, possibly the new twenties, zildjian ks or k customs. does anyone have experience with all of these? i'm in love with paiste cymbals and am really leaning towards the dark crisps but i could still use some info before ordering through guitar center

Based on my newly aquired 14" K Custom Special Dry hats i'd give those a try if you can find a pair at a store. They make a 13" model too.
If you like a dark sounding high hat with an excellent foot sound with a warm defined solid chip and a great closed stick sound these baby's deliver the goods. Half open hits and quick open lifts and accents speak very well with these hats. Remind me in some ways of my old Paiste 14" sound creation hats from many years back but warmer and less metallic sounding but still with the great foot sound I liked on those old hats and the dark sound. The top K Custom Special Dry cymbal also has some similar sound qualities to an old K.Istanbul 14" mid forties old stamp I have. I've owned alot of good hats and these are right up there with the best i've come across.
Just another option to check out.

The K Zildjian hi hats (original, plain old K) are very nice sounding and should be what you are looking for!

Check out some Bosphorus hats, I would suggest Traditional, Turk or New Orleans Series.

i've played k zildjian but at the time my drum teacher steered me away since he thought they'd be a little thin since i was playing mainly rock but now i play mostly funk but i need something that will fit gym class heroes style hip hop to rage against the machine like heavy funk. i hate the metallic chick sound of the mastersounds and the dark crisps sound alittle metallic but much less and absolutely beautiful when open and the twenties sound very nice but maybe a little too close to the mastersounds. i'd like to try them all but guitar center doesn't carry them all and i'd have to pay to order them which isn't really a problem since i can bring them back

Do you like to play dry hats, too?
If yes, try some Istanbul Turk hats...or some Bosphorus KCDrummer mentioned.
I`ve got some Istanbul Agop Turk hats recently, maybe you like the raw natural sound?
I`ve also uploaded some soundfiles in the thread:

I also love Meinl`s Byzance Dark Hi-Hat, they sound dark, dry and natural.
PS: In the first pic you can (hardly) see my Turk hats and in the second you can see the meinl Dark hats...

actually karl i'm not sure if i want dry hats or not. i've never played extremely dry hats but i would like something that has a certain beauty but also some cutting ability, not overly cutting but just enough to be heard

I have Meinl Byzance dry hats in the regular finish, that might be a good alternative due to that their not extra dry.
Check them out too.

Like I said Ron give the 14" K Custom Special Dry hats a go {or 13's}. Could be just what your looking for. I went through 13 pairs of hats at local stores till I decided on these as my new pair.
Dave King from Bad Plus uses these too I just found out and they sound great in his setup and he covers ALOT of musical ground with them during a performance.

I really like K custom dark hats. real nice dark sound, but you can also play slightly open and drive a metal song if you want. just a really versatile sound.

i second kcdrummer's comment about bosphorus. i could talk to you about them all day, but i suggest you go over to cymbalsonly.com and check out some of the clips. you just might like 'em. ;)

Give a pair of 14" K/Z hats a go as well.

I didn't care much for my A Mastersounds either and after trying a set of 14" sabian paragons, I bought them on the spot. Very nice hats indeed and not near as loud, cutting and overpowering as the A Mastersounds.

I agree with KCDRUMMER, listen to and try the Bosphorus Hats, Everytime I go to the shop I have to try to walk away from them they sound so nice. I use two sets right now, K Custom and New Beat hats on my remote, the K Custom although not the Dry series have a nice Dark sound, the New Beats are Bright, perfect combination for my taste.
Try the Bosphorus..

Another vote for Bosphorus! And again, I recommend you check out the Traditional (my current favourite), New Orleans Turk but also Versa series. I haven't heard the Versa hats in person, but they're apparently amazing. The samples at cymbalsonly are pretty nice though.
I'm running 14" traditional dark hats. They're stamped as mediums, but they are really light so I think that they're more likely the dark model. Regardless, they're fabulous. Check 'em out.

i listened to alot of bosphorus and love the new orleans but they're not as crisp and tight as i would like, maybe throwing a heavier bottom on would help. they do have an amazing dark, non-metallic sound to them
