So I had a gig this weekend, where we were playing on the outdoor patio and another band was playing inside. On my break, I popped in to catch a little bit of their set and I was amazed at the sound of his crashes. It's the exact sound I've been looking for. The other drummer came up to me as I was breaking my gear down and we talked a little about each other's gear. I told him I really loved his crashes and he told me they were 18" and 19" Sabian Vaults. Well I'm definitely going to be checking these out. I wondered how close these are to Zildjian A Custom crashes? Anyone playing these?

I have a 16 and an 18. The 18 is about idea for a clean and clear crash. It's certainly not dark and complex, but I'm not going that direction. I like the 16, but it's not quite as smooth as the 18, maybe just a consequence of that size cymbal.
I have the 17" and 19" crashes and i absolutely love them. You wouldn't think that they could project as well as they do considering how thin they are. I love the full sound you get out of them, especially in the bigger sizes. You might have durability issues if you're a super hard hitter, but otherwise whack away. I am certainly happy with mine.

Just an update. I ended up picking up a 17" Sabian Vault crash, brand new, for $125. I'm very happy with it and it fit's in nicely with my Zildjians and Paistes

That's what I think also. I haven't upgraded cymbals for 20 years, so I went to check out the new Zildjians. I didn't like the A customs. I liked a couple of the K crashes, but it still wasn't what I ws looking for. I'm probably going to pick up an 18" Vault, and then a Zildjian K custom ride. I should be good for another 20 years, lol

"vault"....more $$$....comes with the sounds they make. I've been using exclusively Sabian for 20 years...vault line stuff is extraordinary. Sabian puts a lot of craftmanship into the higher lines in their stable.
Personally, I'm stuck on the HHX stuff right now...Weckl series splashes and crashes...love em'. That plus a HH Raw Bell dry ride...

How did you manage to pick it up new for only $125? I thought they were around $400 in stores.

Ebay! Deals are out there. Plus, I think $400 is high retail.
