Today I completed my new cymbal set with the purchase of one fine pair of high hats. I aquired a pair of Zildjian K.Custom 14" Special Dry hats. Great chick sound with foot and very good top cymbal sound for partially open and closed with a stick. A dark but very pleasing sound with good definition and warmth both with stick and foot and they can give out quite the sound if leaned into partly open or deliver tight clean beats closed tight.
I had to cover alot of musical ground with my first gig with them tonight and they certainly delivered the goods big time. Very impressed.

Congrats and welcome on board! =)
Once I played on a 13" Special Dry Hi-Hat...on a music fair. It sounded excellent!
Gives a very nice touch I think, I like that feel of those drier cymbals.
And it is lathed? I`m not sure right now...

Thanks Karl.
Yes only the underside of each cymbal is finely lathed right up to the top of each bell. The tops of both hats have both large and small hammer marks and are scored so it would appear.
I really liked the feel of the tight closed top hat with the stick as it has an excellent response and sound. As mentioned the foot sound is very solid and they don't choke or have any strange overtones and the sound cuts through with a very pleasing "chip". They also supply a very nice sound compliment to the rest of my new set and finds i've recently put together:
20" Z. K. Con light ride
18" Z. K Custom Dark crash
14" Z. K.Custom Dark crash
Wish I had a chance Karl to compare them to the 13" model but I was pretty knocked out and pleased with these new Special Dry 14" hats on the gig last night. Good stuff Zildjian!

Well these great new Special Dry 14" hats inspired me to purchase a new high hat stand today. I bought Yamaha HS 740 stand. Very solid and smooth well built lightweight stand with great foot action.
A fine new stand to match up with this truly fine set of Zildjian K Custom Special Dry 14" hats. Great combo!.

Yeah, congrats!
Yamaha builds good hardware as I were able to notice that...earlier I found Yammie`s hardware just a bit strange but after I got to know it really...wow, I`m pretty impressed with those bass drum pedals and with those Hi-Hat stands as well. They have a good light feeling, easy to play.
Can you maybe give us some pics? =) I`m so curious how your new stuff looks together...
have fun!

Yes i'm very impressed with the quality and "feel'" of the Yamaha hardware particularly this HH stand Karl. Easy to quickly set the tension/action for the med. thin K Custom Special Dry top hat. A smooth and quick foot response and very solid for a lightweight stand.
Will work on getting a pic together of my new cymbal family Karl.

Yamaha still continues to make great equipment; Their stands are in the best class. I have been using a new to me aquistion as well; a pair of older K Zildjian hi hats and something I noticed tonight is that the bell seems to look smaller than normal compared to my other hi hat cymbals.

Just some further additional comments now the cymbals have gone through a good break in period now. As i've noticed with most new hats it takes a bit of time for hats to develop a true character sound wise as the outer edge that makes contact with each cymbal gets worn from lots of playing then the real foot sound of the hats takes on a more defined quality. This is exactly what has taken place with the 14" K Custom Special Dry Hats. The chick foot sound now is very warm and solid without any extra overtones on occasion with foot closings like i've found on most new hats. The foot sound now is very crisp, solid and warm more so than when brand new unplayed at first. Man I love the sound of these hats even more now.
Just to check reference them after over a month of owning them I took them back to the L+M shop I bought them from and did some comparisons to other fine high hats in the store. Had Shane at L+M help me by doing some playing on different hats and the K Special Drys to hear how they sounded from a distance both in regards to foot, stick and foot splash sounds. Due to the dark quality, warm foot and stick sound and generally unique sound character the 14" K Custom Special Dry hats still came out on top for the particular sound I was after well now sounding even better than the day I first bought them.

I just bought a set over the weekend. These were the last set the store had and they said they were being discontinued due to poor sales. I'm really happy with them, and I'm especially proud that I bought these all on my own without having to ask for a lot of opinions (and I don't think I even know what dry means, except as in a martini).
I listened to some K Lights, K Constantinople, K Custom Dark but kept coming back to these. Plus they really look neat, like they just came out of the furnace.

Great choice and glad you nailed down a pair before they go the discontinued route. I guess just not enough players were willing to give these very fine hats a go so sales were slow. Very glad to have mine I love them. They have everything the Sabian 14" JD Encore hats were missing IMO being both nice and dark with an excellent foot sound and great dark stick character too with no funny overtones thrown into the mix. Congrats on your fine pair too.
