Hey guys, I've got a couple of new videos up. One is me playing 'Ants Marching' by Dave Matthews, and no, I can't get all of Carter's crazy licks, but I did my thing. The other video is just a short little groove solo type thing I just kind of improvised after playing Ants Marching.

Cheers!

DOPE! really liked the Ocean Avenue cover, i'm gonna try that song tomorrow! great playing.

one question, i am in the middle of getting my toms of the bass drum, and above the snare like you have, i am probably gonna just use a tama or Yamaha clamp that is adjustable and put one end on a cymbal stand and one on the tom mount bar that would normally go into the bass drum.
how sturdy will this be? im guessing i would be able to get the clamp fairly tight? anyway let me know.

*that may have been a stupid question cause from what i can see are you using a rack now that i think about it? not positive.

well your awesome. what crashes are those specifically (i see A custom) cause i really want some bright ones. i have a 18" K dark now, and need some bright stuff to contrast.

check out my kit. a link is in my sig, you can see my setup there. oh one other thing, when mounting the toms of the bd, i have my snare fairly low usually (lowest setting on stand) to have them almost the same height as the snare they would touch the bass drum... how'd u get around this.

sorry to ask so much, my mind is flowing about this tom idea.

Alright, I would suggest the Yamaha clamp, just because I have had experience with that, and it worked like a charm. Very sturdy and easy to set up/tear down. Depending on the weight of your cymbal stand (double braced, thick piping, etc.) will determine whether or not you will be able to mount it off. Before I had this rack, I had the 8" and 10" toms mounted off of a Pacific boom stand, and it held just fine for more than a year.

On my left is an 18" A Custom Fast Crash and to the right is an 18" A Custom Crash. For reference, I'm using a 20" A Custom ride, 14" New Beat Hi Hats (70's era), an 8" A Custom splash, an 8" Sabian AAX splash, 13" Sabian Fusion Hi Hats, and an 18" Wuhan China. I love all of my cymbals, they're all perfect for what I play, bright, cutting sounds. I do play jazz, so I'm in the process of digging up some K's and whatnot.

Okay, as far as the tom mounting goes, one of the hard parts when using 10" and 12" toms like you have is their depth and getting them over the bass drum, as you've noticed. That's why I like using an 8" and a 10", because they're easier to position. I sit really high, because I'm 6'2", so getting the toms low enough isn't really a problem for me. My snare stand is almost all the way to the max height, so I've got an extra 6" or so in height to work with. The only hint I can give is to raise your stool a bit, see if you're still comfortable, and then go about adjusting your gear.

Good luck man, setting up the kit is one of the hardest things to do. I mess with mine constantly, trying to get it 'perfect.' Just today I moved my stool about 4 inches to my left and my hi hat/slave pedal forward so my legs are more symmetrical.

Good luck, and keep on rockin'!

Ok thanks alot. and i will definitely look into the yamaha clamp to match the rest of my drums, i have a yamaha boom stand that is mid-high range and another Tama Road Pro stand. both are sturdy. The thing is i've become a custom to a low setup for some reason (maybe because i've been playing that way since i started) but ya, i am over 6 feet just under 6' 2". I should try raising some stuff to compensate for those toms, which are not too deep. fairly shallow. I will let you know how this is going when i get the clamp in a week or so.

I have a similar cymbal set up. 20" A custom medium ride, new beat hats 14", 17" A medium thin crash, 10" A custom splash, 18" K dark crash, sounds just peachy when hit in unison with the 17" medium one. i do although want one brighter one, and i also want a 16-18" china, what brand is yours wuhan?

well i will definitely take your advice and try raising the snare, just one thing is i like my cymbals close together, like i don't like to be too spread out... is it still possible to get the cymbals nice and close together when you have the toms above the snare? (not ridiculously close) like in my kit pics in my sig...

thanks man. are you just using a cam mic? cause your cymbals and all drums except the bass sounded really crisp.

Yeah, my cymbals are all at a good distance, not too far, not too close. And I recorded this with a little shotgun mic on top of the camera, not too much. I think it's a mono mic. Thanks again, man.

Anybody else? I haven't gotten too much feedback, yet.

youd did, pretty tight drumming.

MY only advice is to relax. And when you hit a cymbal, make sure that the volume and placing of the sound in the song would fit. small things make big differences.
