Finally, I've put my new cymbal on lay-by. It's a K 22" Left Side Ride to compliment my 22" Dry Light Ride. It's a beautiful warm cymbal with 3 rivets in-built. My main ride is very dry and incredibly articulate and so for my second ride I was after a ride that had warmth and more wash. The Left Side is quite thin and gets a great 'wobble' going on and is not overly washy even with it's rivets. They add just the right amount of sizzle.
Fortunately for me I guess the majority of drummers in melbourne are all rock/funk and metal guys. 'Cause at the store where I am getting it, they had a small clearance of old cymbals that hadn't had any interest for a long time. Hehe they were all amazing K customs, like the dry complex, left side, 19" armand, pre aged light ride...it was incredible. All the best cymbals in the store were all the ones that hadn't had the slightest bit of interest!?!? All the ZXT's, white paiste 'rude' cymbals and other pieces of plate-like crap sell brilliantly...? So the K's were all a minimum of 40% off!
Anyway, I had played this a few times before and desperately wanted it but hadn't been in for long time. I certainly didn't expect it to still be there, so to my surprise not only was it still there but on a huge discount and I just simply had no choice.
Not too long now till my new cymbal!!! Wooo!!!

Hey, amazing story!
So you also own a 22" Dry Light Ride? I also have it as a main ride. Isn`t that a beauty?
And I think you made a gooood choice with that Left Side Ride. I personally like the 22" model much better than the 20" version. Sounds really unique.
I was also thinking about getting a 22" Left Side Ride...haha, if I did this we now would have the same set-up :-D
However, I hope you have fun with it. Congrats!

Firstly congratualtions on the great purchase, but which store did you go to!? Min 40%off K's! So how much did you pay for the Lesft side ride? And do they stock Istanbuls?...

I love the stupid music stores. Big sellers around here are Sabian Xs20, Zildjian ZBT, Zildjian A Custom, Sabian AAX but no one stocks anything else. Mainly it's because people don't know any better. I've heard people asking what the difference is in ZBTs and Zildjian As. I know friends that buy huge sets of ZXTs and whatnot instead of buying a few decent ones. Good job on finding those Ks. I'm not a big fan of the dry sounding cymbal but if that's the one you were looking for, that's a great deal. The only Ks I've seen in a store were K splash 8. K Custom Fast crash 17, K Custom Dry ride 20", K Custom ride 20", K Custom Dark ride 20". I'm a big band/oldies rock guy so I'm more into Zildjian As and I just got a Sweet Ride which does the trick for me. It's fun to find a nice cymbal you like. The music scene around here is all hard rock or electronic (hip hop/rap/R&B--anything not requiring a real band) so I have a hard time finding stuff like heads, sticks, cymbals. I'm big into the traditional style and sound and it's hard when you don't know what you're looking for as no one can really help. You can order anything online these days but if you don't know what it feels like, what's the point? It was hard to even find anything around 5A or smaller in sticks. They were all big ol' things that remind me of marching band...and don't even think about ordering brushes :)

I agree; it is harder to find a music store which stocks anything besides the latest "Rock" cymbal and I don't think that I would order somthing like he bought online or mail order.

ha ha, even i found a store like that in bombay. sellin all Ks and K customs at half the price. picked up a pair of k hi hats and 22" k custom medium ride for like 60% of the US sale price. and mind you cymbals in countries other than US cost a bomb.
we all are smiling. i like that.

Haha cool, everyone can dig it! Yes, I am probably getting it for what it's actually worth without all the marketing and the K name. I think the Left Side was $450 from $850 if I remember correctly.
Hey Karl man, yes I really like the Dry Light. It's a beautiful cymbal, so articulate and defined. If you had a Gretsch kit (with a 16" bass drum though) and did get the Left Side we would be the same. Hey, great minds think alike yes?
Hey Latin, it's the Billy Hydes in Flemington. I know they have about 3 Dry Complex Rides (the Bill Stewart cymbal in thin, thin and medium, all 22") which are fantastic and I would've loved to have got one but it wouldn't have gone to well with my setup I think. They also have the Armand sweet ride I think it's called which again is damn nice but the crash was a little bright for me (they also have a number of crashes, splashes, a china or two and some other stuff). No Istanbuls as far as I saw.
It's very weird but I guess the young 'rock/punk' demographic is by far the largest. It is just a pity that it makes it so difficult to find a nice cymbal because we would usually have to order them in and that adds more cost on top again! Then again, I really can't complain because both my ride cymbals were bought on large discounts because no one else was buying them...hehehe.
So now what has to happen is everyone has to stop buying or asking after some nice hats, maybe the constantinoples, then I can get them hideously cheap hehehe!

Ahh Billy Hyde, i was hoping for a little drum shop that didn't just sell those 'pop' cymbals. Last time i went to Billy Hyde (Blackburn) they had those white RUDE's set up on an export. Oh my God i had no idea they sounded that bad! Thoey arn't even bloody cymbals, they where just metal discs that where amazily dead, and there was two 17/18 looking metal heads hitting (not playing) them and being amazed at how well they sounded, and "no wonder Joey uses em!" Disgusting!
I'm just really looking for somewhere that stocks Istanbuls. I'm on the verge of buying a 21" Istanbul Agop Signiture, from cymbalsonly but buying over the net...i just don't like it. I have to hear, feel the cymbal personally, get to know the individual cymbal. Not just order a metal disc from a factory and have it shipped over. Thats just the way i am. So far i'm thinking (i know...) Andrew Charles...
Anyway well done on the ride post some clips/pics when you get it...which will be?...

Hey, check out Drumtek in Northcote. I'm positive they have some Istanbuls. I'm not sure how many, but I do remember that they had some. It's possible they even have your one.
Ummm, I don't know, should only be a month or two. Yes, I'll try to post some pics or something:)
Hey don't forget. White cymbals are cool;)

I second the vote for Drumtek. I got my Bosphorus cymbals there and when I was there at the end of last year they had Istanbuls on display. They had probably 2/3 of the number on the bos rack; maybe 10-15 rides and crashes.
I'm glad Billy Hydes aren't selling their cymbals for what they're worth. I'm not a fan of that store, Gary Hyde is a tool.

Hey, I know how you feel. I'm living at college out at Monash University in Clayton at the moment. It takes between 45 - 60 mins to get into the city for me on public transport becuase I haven't got my car down in melb at the moment. It would probably take me just under 2 hours to get to Drumtek from college.

Man, you guys have it easy! Try living in Mornington! Hehehe
Lucky my girlfriend lives on the city fringe. Otherwise it would take me a lot longer than 2 hours to get there which it still does too often. I just moved back down here with my dear mother 'cause it's too damn expensive renting in the city and going to uni etc etc.
Latin, definitely check out Drumtek. Thats where I got lessons for quite a while. They're all really nice, knowledgeable guys down there. Check out there website. They often have sales happening which you could try and catch.
Yeah Billy Hydes is a weird place. They have these old crusty second hand looking drum books for sale at the first hand price...a wee bit dodgy if you ask me. Drumtek is the place to go for educational material and videos etc.

Went down to JB today looked in the bargin bin, got a hell of a find. Buddy Rich: Buddy's Rock. Havent listend to the album in full yet, but so far its a killer album. I haven't heard him in these contexts much before, but his brush playing is beautiful. Check the CD out if you haven't got it yet. Also picked up this 3 disc set for $10 called Brazilica cafe. Assuming the obvious, it turns out to be a 3-disc set of Brazilian dance music, as in clubs. Not good. Its got the old midi dance bass and snare, mixed with some real Brazilian roots, hmmm...not the best. They had a Latino and cuban set there as well, should got them, damb it.
