I did a search but didn't find what I needed. What heads do you run on a 16"x 18" floor tom that is being converted to a bass drum? I run the SKII / PS3 on my 18"x24" bass drum, but have no experience in converted floor toms. The drums are 89' keller shelled DW's. I'm picking up a cradle tomorrow, I have some small sushi bar gigs coming up. Thanks, Greg.

On my 16x16 bass drum i use double evans hydraulics, ie batter and reso.

Helps to catch the tonnes of overtones from my cheap shell, (though your keller shell wouldnt have this problem) which gives it a nice boom and decent attack with a wooden beater and falam patch.

On your kit, a double ply batter, maybe a pinstripe, and a single ply reso with felt would most likely do the trick.

Bump. Just wondering if anyone has experience with a 16"x18" floor tom to bass drum conversion? I've heard the same heads that work on an 18"x24" bass drum don't work on the 18" floor tom/bass drum. Thanks for any responses.

I haven't tried a 18" Floor tom conversion, but I really thought about it when I had a 18" floor tom as part of my old set. I'd think something fairly muffled (but not quite to the point of a super kick or emads) would work really well, e.g. a Evans EC2 or Aquarian Performance II... though I would perhaps try a superkick I if you planned on converting it to a bass drum and not really using it as a tom anymore.

I actually want to use it both as a floor tom and a bass drum. I don't mind having to switch the heads out for different gigs. Right now I'm just using one floor tom, 14"x16", but I wouldn't mind going two floors for certain gigs.

Maybe run the same head combo you use on your real kick? I'd be going P3s both sides with the reso ported. Perhaps EQ4 on the batter EQ3 resonant head for the front.

P3 as well here but hadn't thought much of it on the reso side until now. I use a 15" tom in this manner so I am anxiuos to see what it sounds like with two P3s on it!

I heard the SK's don't sound too good on 18"s. I'll probably go with PS3's, clear batter, black reso.

i would recommend a coated powerstroke 4 on the batter and a remo ebony head on the reso. Great sound out of a bass drum like that...

I actually play in a sushi bar with that and it works very well for me.

What size are you running this on? Is it a bass drum or converted floor tom?

it is a gretsch catalina club bass drum. 18x16. I got the idea after I played a GMS bass drum (16x16). You will be happy with it.
