I know that there may have been a thread on this at one time, but I figured I'd start a new one. What is your favorite "Live" album?
Before I get into mine, I have to let you guys know something. I'm not a big fan of live albums at all. I could care less for most of them because I would much rather hear the studio version of the song, unless the live version stands out...if you know what i mean...?
Rush - Exit Stage Left
The Trees into Xanadu
Led Zeppelin - The Song Remains The Same
The Song Remains The Same, The Rain Song, No Quarter
Yes - Yessongs
The debut of Mr. Alan White on this one.
Kiss - Alive 3
I saw them on the "Revenge" tour and listening to this just reminds me of my ears ringing for four days straight!
Grand Funk - Live Album
Mark, Don & Mel...an album full of rock

I love Bonham's playing live when he incorporates the tympani's and gong into the songs his playing was always killer live he didn't. have to hold back on anything.I was always in favor of Kiss "Alive" that was the first album I ever got. back in 1976 when I was 6 .I like listening to studio cuts but I love when a band sounds just like the album live.

The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway by Genesis. Its a live recording of the entire album on the box set. The first time I heard it, it floored me, and I've been in love with it since. I generally like Phil Collins' drumming, and some of his stuff from this album really amazes me.
I also like Exit... Stage Left by Rush, Yessongs by Yes, Live at Royal Albert Hall by Cream, and Live at Leeds by The Who.

I would much rather hear a live version cause good bands improvise. (i.e. normal guitar solos are stretched longer, songs are done faster, drum wise the fills are most of the time different, and so on.) For a live song, you get to hear the true talent of the band and not a touched up studio recording.
Led Zeppelin "How the West Was Won"

The Police - Live! (1995)
I have this one. I love the beginning of "So Lonely" (on the first disc) when Sting says, "I feel so...I feel so lonely". You hear Stewart Copeland say into his mic, "I'm not surprised", and
then they go into the song. Classic!

Bela Fleck and the Flecktones - Live at the Quick

I really don't like live albums, all the whooping an hollering and no sight of the audience...can't really see the point. Love live DVD's though and I'm lucky enough to have a monster home cinema set-up with a huge projected image and 600w of sound. Good job our house is detached!
For the musicianship, entertainment and good listening mine would be:
Rush - Live in Rio
Carl Santana - Supernatural Live
Eagles - Hell freezes over
Walter Trout and the Radicals - Relentless
Simply Red - Live in London
ELO - Zoom Tour Live
Uriah Heep - Gypsy
Possibly an eclectic mix but for me good music is good music!

1. Kiss Alive!!! What a great album. This is what made "live" albums popular.
2. Iron Maiden Live After Death. Another fantastic album. Great sound with even better songs.
3. Kiss Alive II. This album only had a couple cheesy songs, but overall was incredible.
4. Black Sabbath Live Evil Dio really shined on this album. He even sang a couple of songs better than Ozzy (NIB)
5. Slayer - Decade of Aggression. This is probably the least polished of any live album ever created. You can hear all of the mistakes. But, it is so raw that you can feel it in your bones!
6. Racer X - Live Extreme. You hear what might be the most incredible group of metal musicians ever put together to do nothing but show off. Paul Gilbert at his very best, Bruce Builliet (The "second guitarist" who was under appreciated due to Gilbert), John Aldrette on Bass (Not quite Billy Sheehan, but pretty close) and finally, the most underrated drummer in Metal, Mr. Scott Travis.
7. Lamb of God - Killadelphia I hate the singer but the actual music sounds top notch. Chris Adler's drumming is really, really good on this.

By far, Mother's Finest live (1978). Barry Borden is like a funky John Bonham. He plays with Marshall Tucker Band right now and used to play with Molly Hatchet as well. Those two bands aren't really my cup of tea, but MF was awesome back in the day. One of the great underrated drummers out there!

So many great suggestions with lots I need to check out. My faves (mixing DVDs and Albums)
The Who - Live at Leeds - All time best live Rock disc imho.
Rush - Exit Stage Left - Rush at their best imho. Neil going crazy and showing so much energy.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kse01ftDAU0
Peter Gabriel - Secret World - Manu Katche is great!
King Crimson - Live at Frejus 1982 - From Neil and Jack and Me concert DVD. Bruford is great as always and Adrian Belew is a monster Singing, playing insane guitar and lots of drumming from him too.
Mahavishnu Orch- Between Nothingness and Eternity - Not the best sound quality but Cobham shreds.
Jean Luc Ponty - Live 1978 - I had this on cassette and they wouldn't release it on CD until recently. I had to make a copy of the cassette to listen to because it was getting worn out. Casy Schurell is the drummer I think.
Bjork - Live at Cambridge 1998 - Electronic drums and programming from Mark Bell here, a concert masterpeice.

I have never understood the appeal of that guy's music. His popular interest is easy enough to figure out, but I don't understand his mention among musicians.
I don't mean that as an attack but honest confusion.

I wanted to post to this thread a while back, but couldn't decide. But now there's no question!
Art Blakey Quintet "Live at Birdland"
Just got it last night and listened to it twice already. The raw power of Blakey's playing and the sound of his drums combined with the energy of a live performance gave me goose bumps....

James Brown - "Love, Power, Peace"
This is my favorite live album hands down. It was recorded in 1971, when James Brown and his band were at their funkiest and most energetic. It features "the original JBs" including Bootsy Collins, Catfish Collins, Bobby Byrd, Fred Wesley, and of course drummer Jabo Starks. The music hardly ever stops as they usually bust right into the next song without pause. The crowd goes absolutely nuts throughout the show. I can listen to this album at any time and it gets me totally pumped.
