Hello all, I am really looking into new cymbals and I am leaning towards Paiste but I just don't know where to start.. I looked at the 201 line and I listened to them on the Paiste Sound room on their website but those things are never accurate. Can anyone who knows Paiste cymbals well help me out here? I just need to know where to start and what to avoid and so on.. I'm going to a music store in town tomorrow that carries Paiste to see what they sound like in person, but I still need some help, Thanks

Paiste Soundroom is pretty accurate from what I have experienced...but I haven't ever tried the 201s ...Paiste do have really good low-end cymbals though...however if you can spend some more I would go with the Pst3s or Pst5s...I really like those cymbals...they also blend really well with higher quality cymbals too...I am biased though cause I love Paistes ...ALOT!

Alright that actually helped out aloooot. I saw the PST5s but I couldn't figure out if they were lower or higher than the 201s, Thanks man..

EDIT: I forgot to ask you, how do they sound in comparison to Zildjian ZBTs? Those are what I have now and I don't want a step down..

This may be just my personal opinion...but I think they are a bajillion times better than the ZBTs...Its a huge step up...you will love them. They are also more durable.

To me, they sound like top-quality cymbals...especially in the larger sizes...but thats just my opinion on them...anyways...glad I could help out!

So I'm thinking about the pack that comes with 14 hats, 20 ride, and 16 crash and then I'll buy an extra 18 medium crash.. Would that be good?
My plan is to sell or pawn my ZBTs and mow lawns to get the remainder of the money and buy the Paistes this summer or earlier

It sounds like you have a pretty good plan there, man. My cymbal set up is actually pretty close to that...and I am happy as I could be with it.

Awesome, thanks you've been a HUGE help. Also one more question, how is the bell on the ride? I need a good bell on my ride

Well, I am not sure...I use a 802 ride...but the Pst5s are just updated versions of the 802s so I'm thinking it either sounds about the same or is better...and my ride bell sounds pretty good to me...but the Pst5 could be different.

Paiste sells two different PST 5 sets . Make sure you get the one you want.

Drumminjohn, since you have not said what your budget is,may I suggest that you try for something better than the PST5 series, like the Alphas or best yet,the 2002s. These are the beginning of Paistes' Semi-Professional-to-Professional lines and both are affordable if you do the right bit of shopping about. In my experience, the sound files in the Paiste site are pretty spot-on. I recently bought a 17" 2002 Wild Crash from Rupps Drums of Denver,Colorado,(pretty cheaply,I might add,) and it sounds almost exactly like the sound-sample in the Paiste archive. I've also just recently purchased a 16" 2002 Thin China (also from Rupps) and a 22" Twenty Series Ride (from Mass Music,) that I thoroughly love, and I got them fairly cheaply considering that anything Paiste costs an arm and a leg.Let us know how your search turns out....

I was looking at Alphas today, I never made it down to the music store but I will try tomorrow and see if they have any Alphas.. I want the 2002 Bonham pack but I am kind of short on money.. I think with my budget and income (like $0.000003) I may have to go with the PST 5's, but I love the way they sound on the soundroom, so I'm not complaining.. I'll definitely check out the Alphas as well though, Thanks!

Yeah that's one of the best things about Paiste: their low-end cymbals already sound pretty good. I have a Paiste 302 ride, and two soundformula crashes and a soundformula china (equivalent to modern signature line cymbals), and they blend right in. Paiste Pst5 sounds like a good choice when you're on a budget, but it's also worthwhile checking out used cymbals, Paiste's are really tough and will last a lifetime if you maintain them properly. You could get some high-end cymbals for probably the same amount of money you'd spend on pst5's.

I didn't even think of used cymbals, thanks philly
