I really dig the look of a few of these retro kits, but the closest place to go see one in person is several 100 miles away. Anyone have any "in the flesh" feedback. I need "bar basher."

they do look awesome

from what i know, they are basically the equivalent of the delites but in birch. if you can hear a designer birch kit (unlikely), or a force 200* series, you should get an idea of the general sound.

A force kit won't be any real indication of what a birch s-class kit sounds like, that's like saying my birch pacific sounds like a birch dw (it doesn't by the way. Its crap). They'll be different woods with different edges, etc.

And by the way, I've only ever seen Maple S-Class kits.

Gmrakich, the guy Damosyz... (I can't remember the end of his name) knows a fair but about his Sonors I think. Also MFB can probably help here, being the Sonor geek he is...

Well to be honest I haven't given the kit in question a bash, so I really can't say. I think they look great and will sound equally great, but I really do not know in this case. I would buy one though.

S Classix is replacing the S-Class series

Sonor have decided to have a German made birch kit to add to the mix in The S classix. The preceding SClass was a thicker maple shell than the Delite, so the choice used to be between thinner (Delite) or thicker (S-Class) maple kits. Now the decision youll have to make is between birch or maple kits. Smart move on the part of Sonor IMO.

The S-Classix are rumoured to be very nice kits, but they havent landed in Australia yet so alas, I havent had a chance to try them yet but I will as sson as they arrive. Ill possibly get to review them.

If you can get an S class pro in maple, get it! Otherwise, the new birch should do fine as well. How are they priced nowadays?

Just to educate you a bit......apples to oranges is what you just tried to compare....force series and S-class have totally different shell construction, edges...they are not similiar at all in sound

Actually, with the exception of the kick drums, those two kits can sound similar in tone.

Sorry man disagree..different shell thickness and edges equate to totally different sounds....Ican tell you 5mm vs. 7mm makes a HUGE difference

there is no comparing a force birch with a s-classix birch....I'll stand by my statement

^ Thats cool, It really depends how picky you're being and I also stand by what I said - Partly because I (have to) hear these drums side by side every day.

Tuned to a similar pitch, the S-Class toms are a little louder and more sensitive to the touch (due to their extra thickness/density), but the force toms tend to have a little more 'roundness' to their sound. That being said, the tone sounds remarkably similar, even to the trained ear.

The snares are very different though.

I'm just bummed the S-Classix doesn't come in a laquered finsh, otherwise I'd be all over it.

This thread is pretty old, but I read it when I decided to buy my Sonor S classix earlier this year and wanted to add to it for future buyers.*
Luckely I have a great store in my city " indoorstorm.com" that had a set to listen to. They set about 6 different toms from different manufacturers up in a row. I think it was something along then lines of: Porkpie, DW, Gretchs, Sonor, Taye etc. Pretty high end stuff all the way around. This way I could play each tom one after the other to hear the tone very clearly. The Sonor had by far the most clear, clean and true tone of them all. Really a very musical tone that just rings out. In my humble opinion, this is exactly what a drum should sound like. I paid 3000 for a 5 piece kit and I absolutely love the sound of these drums. I wanted to buy my "last and only kit" and believe there will never be a time that I will feel a need to upgrade from these. What would I upgrade to? Really! Before buying I hesitated only if perhaps the Delites just looked better since they have a gloss finish. But the mat walnut finish of my drums is really beautiful and very classic looking. I highly recommend the classix drums, I think they are incomparable in sound and quality and very much worth every penny. I would seriously doubt that if you got a set that you would in anyway be disappointed with them. I hope this helps if you are researching a new set.

S-Classix are the best drums i've ever came across, since the first time i played a kit in the drumshop.
I like them even better then my Delites, go figure.....

They are very thin shells, something to consider, projection is less then my yammies, but tonewise....S-Classix hands down.

Great sounding drums. I've also loved the sound of UFIP cymbals for years.

I was lucky enough to try a handful of kits at the Sonor distribution center where I live and the S-Classix was a definite stand out. So resonant, powerful, and clean. It actually convinced me that I'm a birch guy, after playing maple kits for 2 decades. Supporting what others have said, these drums sing so strong and clear. Bearing edges were flawless and I was impressed with the overall attention to detail, easily on par with DW (I have a DW kit as well). And I have the luxury to compare them with Premier Genistas (snatched up a kit over the summer)! I think that the S-Classix and the Genistas are the best birch kits ever made (no slight to Yamaha, I've played Recording Customs and Absolutes, and they are fine kits, just don't have that extra something that the Genistas and S Classix have). If you're a birch guy, you will not be disappointed with the S Classix. Hell, I'm still considering buying an S Classix kit, but hard to justify since I already have 3 kits...

I recently purchased an S Classix kit. I have been drumming for quite some time (25 plus yrs) and have hit many different drum kits, and the S Classix is the best sounding, looking, and easy to tune kit that I have ever played. I myself have had maple kits for the most part and have liked some more than others but these birch shells sing. I got them used and saved a bundle, not a mark on them. If you can get your hands on these and can afford them you will not be dissapointed. I actually had a friend who had a Delite and an S Classix kit and he said hands down the S Classix was a better sounding drum.

Hey guys, I own a 5 pc. Sonor S-Classix in the Walnut Root finish and these drums are "TOP SHELF" The finish and the machining on these drums can't be beat! As soon as you go to tune these bad boys you can feel the quality of Sonors lugs and hardawre and the sound of these drums is so clear and resonant and the tone like no other. These drums are worth every penny! I also have a Sonor Hilite series kit in the Red Maple finish! Hands down Sonor has got a "BIG WINNER" in the S-Classixs series
