View Full Version : Is This A Good Deal?

Hey all,

I was browsing my local craigslist and found this seemingly good condition Yamaha Oak Custom for a price that seemed pretty reasonable. I'm not too experienced with these kits so I was looking for some input. I currently own a Yamaha SCN and love it to death. So for the questions:

Is this as good a price as it seems?

I feel pretty good about the colour but may want to refinish, how much will that cost?

Is it really worth my while to upgrade to this, or should I invest the money in my current kit with some other new stuff?

http://toronto.craigslist.org/msg/279762174.html

Thanks

It's a pretty good price, that's about $200 less than a 4 peice shell pack new (in the US from MF, so that's not including the normal Canadian upcharge). If you like the sound of the oak drums I'd say go for it, you could prob get some good money out of selling your current set. Though I don't know if it'd be really worth it if you plan on refinishing it in the future, but if you want to stick with the color then great.

Yeah that's a great deal. You can use the hardware from your Stage Custom and keep the shells er sell them. I'd definitely pay that price.

Oak shells tend to be louder than other shells. Beautiful drums indeed.

Oak is loud. Great kit. I certainly would consider it an upgrade, to the extent that you may never have to buy another kit again. Sell the Stage Customs to help defray some of the costs, and then the rest of your life all you gotta do is buy cymbals. Hardware. More cymbals. Hardware. And a vintage kit.

Would my SCN hardware work with the oak custom? And how much is a refinishing job?

Thanks for the input everyone.

Fat Elvis recently got his Starclassics wrapped in purple and silver sparkle for about $450US if I remember correctly. Do you want it wrapped or sanded back, re-stained and lacquered?
Big difference in labour there...

$400 -- and that included thr stripes, new BD hoops and virginizing of my kick. It would have been closer to $300 without all that. :)

wrap it -- god gave us trees and chryslers to look at if we need to see wood-grain.

So it's $400US to be completely aesthetically redone AND re-virginized...

It's amazing more people aren't sending partners in....

Alright, then this seems like the deal I've been looking for, so I think the refinishing will come further down the road. In the mean time, what would I be able to get for my kit (just shells, I'd keep the hardware), and does anyone else think this is worthwhile, or are there better sales I can find? I also thought it would be good to contact the guy and arrage seeing them before purchase, just in case.

Here's an almost identical kit to your craig's list kit on eBay. http://cgi.ebay.com/YAMAHA-OAK-CUSTOM-7-PIECE-KIT-BLUE-RIDGE-OAK_W0QQitemZ160100510904QQcategoryZ64444QQssPageN ameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem as there are several Yamaha Oak Customs all in the $1499 range, you, as joe buyer may use that to your advantage. eBay is a great place to research "what stuff costs-today-or this week". It's unfortunate that Stage Customs are not fetching a very high price. Not knowing how many pieces you have, ballpark figure $300-$400 for your kit. Still, you're getting a pro-level kit for around $1K. Not a bad deal.

I would personally MUCH rather pay $1500 canadian on craigslist than $1500 US on ebay....

but thats just me

Thanks for the eBay item, that does look to be similar, I actually thought it was the same until I saw where it was located. The only advantage to buying the craigslist one is it is close enough I could pick it up myself. Just for other's reference, I have a 5 piece Yamaha SCN that I would sell as just shells. Any ballpark figure on their selling price would be super. I had considered buying more toms for my current kit, but i figure that for the same price as buying the new toms added to the price of my kit new, I can purchase a "pro" level set used, if I can determine that it is in good condition.

Haha, good one Ozzy, and thanks for the input.
