What Kind of Music are you playing and what kind of sound are you looking for?
Either way, I love my Sabian AAX Studio Hats, I would recommend them any day.

Maybe some HHX evolutions I really like the sound of HHX hats over AAX. Much crisper high hat even though they are more expensive, AAX studios would be good but maybe the stage hats for rock? Some AA fusions would be nice too, any of these cymbals are good choices its really up to you. But my first choice would be some evolutions.

I respect your preference, definitly...but I can really recommend to go to a music store (or at least listen to sound clips), close your eyes and try any cymbal you wanna hit.
Then you take the one which you liked best and which is in your price category.
When I got my Sabians I thought there would be something like being a Sabian man, being a Zildjian man etc. but I noticed that the name on a cymbal doesn`t matter much. Just thought I would mention this...so, really no offence or so *peace*
So, as I respect your preference I can recommend the HHX Evolution Hi-Hat (this thing is very versatile!), AAX Stage hats/Studio hats, AA Medium hats, HHX Groove hats...

The problem that I find with trying stuff out at stores is that they dont have the variety of cymbals I want. I have yet to see a pair of evolution hats at a guitar center.

14 Inch K's. Those are Truly amazing hats. Although i do think there are some amazing sabian cymbals, i have to say i like Zildjians hi-hats waaaay more. Seriously they are amazing. Look into em.

how about medium hand hammered hats from Sabian? They sound really nice from Sabian's site. I might get one.

Some of the best hi hats I have ever heard are the AA Flat hats in the 13" size!

Although I currently own a pair of these, I don't find them very versatile. And I wouldn't recommend a newer pair mine are form the 1989-2001 era.

I'll reccomend the AAX Stage Hats or AAXcelerators. Both great hats with defined bright sticking and a powerful chick, works great when playing half-open too.
My school has the 13" AA Fusion hats, I wont reccomend them if you are going to play anything at all with the hh open. They sound terrible, way to clangy.
You should also check out some Meinls, they have great affordable lines. Maybe a pair of Amun Soundwave hats or Mb10 Medium hats are what you're looking for. :)

Its not just about the sound. The responsiveness and verstaility of hihats is also what sets apart the good from the bad, and its something that needs to be tested.
Walking into a store, youre guaranteed to find half a dozen hats that sound good (at least). But some may open up better or feel easier to play. Its such an important step to physically try the cymbals out that Im amazed people will still go and order cymbals online or buy without trying.

The is true and I hadn't thought about it! it doesn't really matter what we suggest, you are ther one who is gonna plunk down the cold, hard cash so you have to satisfied with what you get.

If you want hats like Nickelback's Drummer Daniel Adair, he uses 14" AAX-celerator hats and "14 HHX Groove Hats. Try those out, but definitely try the 14" Zildjian K Hats. The most versatile hat I have ever played.
