Hi,
I have been playing for 12 years or so and currently jam with a metal guitarist. I'm looking for some cool beats to play on the toms that would go along with heavy metal in the background. (kind of rammstein guitar sounding) (and I have an electronic drumset so I can make my drums sound like anything). Any ideas?

Try this, it's always good.

It lets you play the cymbals as well so it's like uber-powerful.

Enjoy

I wrote this simple beat, then realized that it's pretty similar to Peart's beat in this video:

Try the Mozambique sticking pattern on the toms (I use the right hand on the lower two toms and the left on the upper two toms) and change it up with accents and different voices. Here is the sticking pattern Steve Gadd uses and I have used in a similar way:

RLRL RRLR LRRL RRLR

All the notes are 16th notes. It is definetly tribal sounding. Depending on your dynamics, speed at which you play it and bass drum ostinato, I'm pretty sure that it'll be a good little groove for you. Let me know how you like it.

WRONG!

You've got it in 6/8, whereas mine is in 4/4. Basically, add a bass drum beat after every 3 notes.

listen to Dream theater for some ideas. For example the intro to "pull me under". Portnoy does alot of jungle grooves, if thats what your talking about.
