Again, in process of organizing before building. Seems like a lot of what I listen to, the drummers have big bass drums. I'm thinking of going real big, maybe even 24 x 26 (Length x Diameter).

any 26 inch bass owners out there? What size? Describe sound and your thoughts.

thanks.

I have a stainless steel 26X12 (formerly marching) bass drum. Most people have a 14" depth, there's not too much of a difference in all honesty. The trick to tuning them is crank 'em up much higher than you would think you need to tune a bass drum. Use some muffling, but don't overdo it. With proper tuning you can get a lot of different sounds depending on how soft/hard you strike it. I have no desire to get anything smaller, the only setting I wouldn't use it in is a small jazz group.

I drive a 26x14. I've had 20x14, 22x14, 22x16, 24x14 and 28x14. I like more traditional depths, for looks, if anything else. And now that I have a Roland SPD-S sampler, I can go to it for any other kick drum I might need. Yeah, I grew up listenning to cats like Bonham, Paice, Kirke, Appice, Powell. OK, still listen to them and maybe I never grew up. Big drums rock. I play my 6 ply Ludwig wide open, clear Powerstroke3 batter and ebony Ambassador with HOLZ reso.

26 x 24 is HUGE! I've never seen or heard one that big, so I'd want to hear it before committing to it.

Has anybody else ever played a 26" that was so deep??? Seems like it could be pretty muddy.

I have a 14"x26" on my kit. The depth is more traditional which has a really nice sound. I use coated Remo Emperor on the batter side, and a smooth white Ludwig med weight on the front. I use felt strips on the reso side and the batter side, no hole in the reso side. I have the reso head cranked way up about 85 on a drum dial, the batter side is around 80. This gives me a great "Bonzo" style sound, very boomy with great projection.

It's a fair bet the "real" kick drum is inside the stage drum. And/or triggered as well. Ginger Fish knows a few things about sampling, triggering and programming.

How did you like the 28?

I was thinking of a dream ROCK kit! 28 kick, 15 rack tom, 18 and 20 floor toms. I am considering building one custom. I just don't know if it is overkill! LOL

26X20 acrylic. It is a monster but sounds great. I'm not a "cluster of 64th notes" kind of player so the slower than normal rebound does not effect me. Also before going 26, figure out how your set up will change. Some people have a hard time dealing with EVERYTHING being at a different level.

Yeah, I read alot about the responsiveness of bigger bass drums, I wouldn't really know since I've used a 24 to this point, nothing else. I will say however that Zach Hill from Hella supposedly uses a 25X26 bass drum and it doesn't sound like it's slowing him down any. SIDE NOTE: I hate how they record his drums but I think it's a product of the recording but who knows.

Yeah, I've thought about that, I've decided I'm not worried. I'm probably going with either one or two up anyway depending on whether I go two bass or one bass. Shouldn't be a big issue.

I will say that when I have compared 22 inch bass drums I seem to like the deeper depths so that is why I figure I would like a deeper 26. I'm just not sure it works that way in reality though... We'll see.

I don't think muddy would be what I'm looking for... I hope not.

I try to narrow down the sound I like, it's hard, I just haven't "listened" closely enough I guess. I want a deep big sound. I don't like dead sound, but I also like that feeling like a giant vacum is being created when the drum is kicked. :)

Oh well the great think about making your own is I can always just chop off some length if I end up not liking the increased depth.

that's exactly what I was thinking, you can always make it smaller. But you'll have to figure out what happens to the holes you've drilled for the lugs - they could end up in a awkward spot if you try to trim off 2" or so.

My 28 started out as a Yamaha marcher, I bought off eBay for under $100 (that included shipping), and I built a roto-tom kit around it. All I did was mount Gibraltar vintage style fold out spurs on it. Got a great sound out of it. Had a little foam that was glued onto the shell and touched the batter and reso. heads (from it's marcher days) that I left alone. All I did was add spurs and put a HOLZ port in the reso. head. Later I changed the batter head to a Powerstroke3. Since then, I scored my clear maple Ludwig 26x14, and it's a keeper for sure.

Man! I LOVE Ginger Fish!!!!

Anyway.... I have a 14" x 26" and I LOVE it. I wouldn't go deeper than like 16" with it through, It would just be to hard to push all that air through it. Plus I HATE the look of over extended bass drums. I have an 18" x 22" and I would never go deeper than that on size bass drum. I think they just look like stupid long tubes and not drums anymore. I was baclstage at a concert a few weeks ago and a bass drum was sitting in a hallway. It looked like it was 24" x 24" and I just throught it was ugly as hell.

I have mine mounted off of my cymbal stand so I can have it at the same comfortable height as when I had a 22" or 24" bass drum.

Well, Remo makes bass heads up to 40" in diameter, so go nuts. Hell, if Tommy Lee can drive a 32"...

As for rack toms, set it up like frank beard from ZZ Top does, using the inside pedal of two doubles (one left-footed, one right). Granted he only plays two 22" kicks, but he'd find it hard to position his 28" deep rack toms on top of the kicks...

that doesn't even look cool...Tommy Lee's 32 looks cool. It looks like Ginger is overcompensating for...something... with that kit.

yeah, but I wasn't talking about if it looked good, would even be usable in a song, if it even is the real drum he's playing, etc. I just said it was big, which you can't deny.

I have a tama starclassic maple kit with a 16x26 kick. (14, 16, 18 inch toms and 8x14 maple snare) i use an eq4 on the batter and the logo head on the front. no muffling and have it tuned loose. it puts out some serious low end and isn't real boomy. it's all in the tuning. i usually tune the front head a little tighter than the batter.

that must be a heavy duty stand (i'm assuming the tom you're mounting is a 14" from your avatar)

To my knowledge, Zach hasn't used his 26x25 in the studio, only for practice and live situations. He stated in his modern drummer interview that he was recording on a 22, probably his starclassic performer kick. For their current tour he's using a 22" Jenkins kick (same material as his 26") Zach has said in the past that he doesn't really like the way 26's record. On a different note he's been using a 30"(!) ride cymbal, by the time he arrived here in Denton last month, he'd already cracked it.

I personally love the drum sounds he's been getting as of late (even though Hold Your Horse Is is probably my favorite drum sound), they're definitely mixed to where they sound best with the volume cranked up.

Yes it is, and the stands that I use are old Yamaha stands from the 80's. Very heavy duty stands that I have had since Jr. High school. Many, Many, Many years ago ha ha.
