I'm currently looking to upgrade my starter kit to something like a tama superstar custom. I played rock to metal type genres, and im looking for great sounding toms (something like 10, 12 , 14, 16..i really like the sounds portnoys toms give off, i like something a little higher pitch than the usual 12, 13, 16). Any thoughts?

If you like higher pitched sounds, you might look at some of the birch kits. If you want a 6+ piece in the $1000 range, I'd look at the Superstar line like you mentioned, Mapex M Birch, Yamaha Stage Custom, or some of the PDP drums.

I would suggest playing around first, and seeing what sounds you like- you may like the sound of maple drums better, and to spend $1000 on a set only to be disappointed doesn't make sense

Ludwig makes very nice birch kits in the $1,000 range. Plus they are bringing back a lot of their cool vintage finishes, you might want to check them out to.

I hear Sonor Force 2005 and 3005 models are being cleared out at fantastic prices to make way for the '07 lines.

This would be my choice.

The Sonor 3005 is an amazing set. I just sold mine. But, it is an amazing kit. You can easily get one and have money to spare!

Probably the best buy on the market right now. They are practically giving them away due to the 3007s coming out. I am thinking about buying one again due to the price. Great hardware, great finish and wonderful bearing edges.

::sigh:: the usual suspects again...

Dare to be different and try out the Taye drums. I paid $1050 (well ok my fiancee bought them for me) for a 5 piece Studio Maple set. (10, 12, 14 toms, 22 bass, 14" snare) If you're looking for something other than the traditional maple their Pro level drums are amazing as well.

Most people just haven't played them so they're not as familiar with them. After having mine for 2 weeks now I can say I'm very glad I didn't go the route of the Tama's, etc. No sense spending extra money to get the same sound.

Horse...one of the main reasons I keep mentioning 3005's is the price right now....It's not about being different....Sure Taye's are good too...but there not $800...like you said why pay more if you don't have to..

$200-300 will buy much needed extra gear.....He stated his budget was $1000

3005's for $800 is without a doubt the best deal going right now...

alright well im looking at the 3005 series at musiciansfriend.com and they all seem to be going for around 1050. i was just wondering tho because there are all these different models like the fusion, fusion 2, and stage 1 and stage 2, and the standerd...and im not really sure which is what im looking for. because im very, very imfamiliar with sonor series, can you help me out? thanks

The "fusion" etc has to do with the sizes of the drums. Basically how high of pitch you want on your toms and the sizing of the bass. My "fusion" kit has 10,12,14" toms for instance where as a kit more geared towards rock might have 13,14,16" toms, etc.

I made the graphic for my sig. Not my best effort, but I didn't want to put too much work into it.

And I cant believe I forgot to mention the Sonor 3005's, I seriously feel ashamed of myself now!!! If you find a good deal on those, I would seriously recommend them as well- they are very comparable to the Mapex Pro M (shells are made in the same factory, even), and are quite a bit cheaper right now. The only thing to consider is that Sonor kits are harder to find in 6-7 piece configurations and can be a bit more challening to expand to those sizes than Mapex or other brands.
