hello
I'm a bit confused. as I found, standard beaters are made to fit 22 bass drums. is that true? will standard beater <eg. puresound speedball standard length> fit 18 bass drum without a lift? what about 20 bass drums? are there any special beaters for smaller bass drums?

The beaters themselves are the same. But some manufacturers make beaters with shorter shafts for smaller drums. I've always played an 18 or 20 inch bass and I like a very short shaft so I've had to get a hacksaw and grinder to all my beaters.

yeah, that's what I mean - the shaft of a beater and it's length. some manufacturers make? do you know any?

I think Slug does, maybe others do as well. Cutting the shaft down is very easy - all you need is a hacksaw, vise and file. I would get whatever beater you like the most and cut it to size.

With the exception of the Ludwig Speed King, every other pedal I've ever played will allow you to adjust beater height without resorting to a hacksaw.

That's true. However, if you want to get your beater shaft very very short (like just two or three inches to hit in the middle of an 18 inch with little or no riser) the bottom tip of the shaft would strike against the drum head when the pedal is in the relaxed position. So you'd need to trim off the excess.

yeah, but won't too long shaft destroy the feel when playing 18 bass drum?

My experience with the Yamaha Flying Dragon Direct Drive hooked up to my 20" kick presented no problem. With an 18", I was using a lift kit because the kick was actually a floor tom. But in my magic box of assorted bass beaters I do have some that would work no problem. But to cut one down further would be easy, also. I've taken the old hacksaw to lots of drum hardware.
