i'm looking at getting a whole new set-up. I play mostly metal, and love aggressive sounding drums. Now, what i want to do is get some coated Ambassadors on my rack and floor toms, but i was just thinking. Clear skins on rack and floor toms always to me sounded like they were out of tune. And clear heads i think cut overtones down and give a warmer sound. If i want an aggressive yet well rounded sound, should i go with the coated, or clear? Or possibly some other type of head?

YUP

In the mean time, look at remo emperors for a fat warm sound. Or evans hydraulics for dead fat sound.

You may want to check out the Powerstroke 3 on a tom.

From the horses mouth, the Remo catalog say's, "from the brightest sounding Clear to the darker sounding Coated, with the Smooth White falling between the two". I will support my esteemed collegue Skitch. Clear Powerstroke3's on my 6 ply Ludwig's, 15, 16, 18 make me smile.

Remo's site only shows the P3 in bass drum sizes ....18 and up? Is this a website error?
Probably is,...everyone is talking about P3s on toms....and Remo's website IS IN FACT poor at best........

There's an option somewhere above the list to choose snare/tom heads instead of bass heads I think

yeh above the size options it gives you an option between bass and snare/tom - batter and resonant

Sorry to burst your bubble, but clear heads typically give you a brighter sound; coated heads a warmer sound.

I play clear Evans EC2's on all my toms - check them out. Good luck!
