I'm willing to replace the clear pinstripes on my beech custom (10-12-14-16 TT). I want a warm sound with moderate sustain and thought of trying the new coated EC 1. If you check the evans chart, coated EC 1 are the warmest heads available with moderate sustain.
Ive tried coated ambassadors before and they were too open on the floor toms. Coated G2's otoh were too dull. So I'm taking the middle road: a single ply coated with muffle ring (sort of 1.5 ply). The other option is clear EC2 but that wouldn't be much difference over pinstripes I guess. If the EC's don't do it for me, there's still clear G2's but they're advertized as very bright.
So how's the EC 1, not too dead on smaller toms, not too open on floor toms?

Well, you could always do like a lot of us do, and not use the same heads on all your toms. For example, Put EC1s on your high toms and EC2s on your low toms. You get the best of both worlds, and if you're concerned about them looking similar, don't fret. They do. I use 3 different heads, G1s, G2s, and EC2s on my toms, of course, this was before the EC1s came out, so maybe I'll have to try to fit them in somewhere.

that's what I'm going to do...
EC1 coated on my 10 and 12 (w/ resonant glass bottoms)
EC2 coated on my 14 and 16 (w/ g2 clears on the bottoms) YES..g2 clears on the bottom......it works!!! BIG BOOMS!! It was a tip I got from here and confirmed it w/ customer service at Evans!

I'm very curious how that sounds. Got any sound samples?

Nope, no sound samples, sorry...I just put them on last Wed.
I was looking to remove that "BOOWWWW" sound out of the floor toms, ...tune them a tad lower, and still get that nice pronounced "boomier" sound. I had seen on a post here on DW that someone said that he hear from a guy at an Evans clinic that you can put G2 clears on the bottom of bigger toms for a "bigger" sound. I confirmed it via an email to Evans customer service and I received a response that confirmed this!!
I told him I had a Birch kit ....and he recommeded Resonant glass on the bottom of the 10-12, and G2 clear for the 14-16 ....[ I had told him I was using EC2s for batters] ....the EC1 comment I made is going to be an experiment! ;)

Why not try a coated Emperor??????
Thinner than the "Pins" and the G2's.

Emperors are the same thickness as G2s, both two plies of 7mil film. just as ambassadors are the same thickness as G1s, with a single 10mil ply.

Ive found a solution: coated amb on all batters, clear amb as reso on toms and clear emp as reso on floor toms. That cuts resonance a lot ont the bigger toms while keeping the feel of a single ply. Bright attack with a mellow, short growl.
Just wondering how you to tune it. I have the toms tuned medium and floor toms low.

hmm, I thought the Emperors were 2 laters of 5mil...maybe I'm thinking of an Aquarian double thin????

Clear EmperorŪ heads are made with two free-floating plies of 7-mil MylarŪ
I think those new Aquarian super-2s are a 7mil over a 5 or a 3, but I'm not sure

So you guys rate the EC1 heads then?
guess I'll try out the 10 & 12 when I next replace, as although the EC2 sound great, I would like just a little more sustain out of them, think I'll keep the EC2 on the 15 & 16 though

that's what i'm doing.
12":
batter; coated ec1
resonant; aquarian classic clear
16"
batter; coated ec2
resonant; clear g2
right now i'm running all ec2s and classic clears, so when the ec1 and g2 comes in on thursday, i'll post my thoughts.
