Hey all,
im looking to replace a broken hi-hat with a new one, probably looking around the £100 ($200) mark but have no idea where to start with the choice available. Our band plays rock, punk and indie music, so any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks,

man i hate to say it but i severly doubt your going to get a decent pair of hats for $200....
i think B8s arent too bad for the price?
I have a pair from a company called Anvil...they were 70 euro(if i recall correctly)....not too bad,but definitely not too good either....

Check out Stagg high hats. Very cheap but excellent high hats. I purchased a set of their "Black Metal" hats recently and I could not be more happy with them. Dream cymbals are also cheap, but they are very thin. I have a ride that I love from them. Check out their "Contact" line for the most rock type of set.
If you have $200 to spend, don't buy B8s, they are very disappointing unless you seriously are out of money. Try everything, your ear is the most important thing, but I think Stagg has some of the nicest cymbals for the price.

Keep an eye out for second-hand hats. You could grab a pair of pro-level pies (for example, Zildjian A Customs) for that price.

Check out Saluda cymbals. Many people on here swear by them like SleepyBrightEyes. They sound very nice and are very cheap. Here's the link to the website (http://www.saludacymbals.com/c/)

dont settle for cheaper hi-hats, go for used hi-hats and just do your research ( as you are with this post) check ebay, cymbalcellar.com and while your looking just keep saving up. how bad would it feel to spend £100 on o.kish hats then see some great cymbals for like £120 a week later. just take your time.

Again, try to go quality used. A cheaper pair might not last as long either since you're playing harder music not to mention sound like cuh-rap. A pro level set will last forever but getting new isn't a necessity.

Thanks for your help so far, but I am now in need of a hi-hat stand as mine has just screwed itself up. Its the 2nd cheap one ive broken, so ill have to obviously spend a bit more on that as well now. I'm thinking £80-£100. Ive looked up a couple, either the Pearl 1000 (is the 2000 worth the extra?) or the Tama Iron Cobra seems popular on here (not sure on prices), or any other suggestions?
In general and i know this is very "easy to say" but if your serious about your sound be careful about buy cheap cymbals. You can make a cheap kit sound great with care, tuning and skins but a cymbal is a cymbal you can do very little to it.
In general i would just save and save unless a seriously good deal comes up second hand.
Ideally for hi-hats if you wan't a versatile pair that have an incredible sustain with them (i.e. you can play slow strokes and the cymbals just keep the sound perfectly inbetween (with good pedal control)) i would advise K Dark Customs. And for bright and articulate ones, Sabian Master sounds. BUT here you are talking serious money.
I did however play these Ziljian 'Bizzare' hats for a ages which i had very little quarrel with (and that is saying something), they were bright and solid, but could not have been more than £150 i'm sure.

I'll second the Saluda recommendation. I just got a pair of Mist X hi-hats and they're easily as good or better than any hats I've played.
agreed, I've got some mist-x hi hats as well from saluda and they're really great
they'll customize cymbals for you, as well

I dont know much about pearl, but Tama Iron Cobra is high-class stuff. But so is Tama Roadpro, which is significantly cheaper. I recommend the roadpro if you are on a bit of a budget.
As to the cymbals: I 2nd the advice on used stuff. People with more money than yourself will sometimes sell really good stuff at a low price, I got most of my cymbals that way.

Take a look at the Classifieds Thread in the general discussion section on this site. There are some good deals. With that budget you might find a pro level second hand hi-hats.
