Darn local music stores only carry B8, ZBT splashes around here...so...
A good splash to buy would be, I'm thinking either 10" Zildjian A splash or 9" Oriental Splash, This is going by the sound files, which, as I know, aren't the greatest. But that's all I have around here. No one ever seems to talk about splashes anywhere, so I'm curious.

well, you dont want something to cheap and that would break on you.. you have to remeber though to keep it at a certain angle when you do get it though (ive learned the hard way) but maybe wuhan has a decent splash? hope this helps

I've heard the 8" A splashes and they had sort of a strange ring to them. I can't hear that on the 10" sound files (Zildjian.com and indoorstorm.com) so I guess that's good.

What type of splash sound are you going for? You mentioned oriental. I recently bought an 8" splash from Saluda. It's a prototype for a series they're working on, so I'm not sure if you can get the same one yet. It sort of has an Asian/oriental kind of sound to it, for lack of a better term. If I hit it with my hand, it sounds like a small gong, that gracefully erupts from low frequencies into the highs. When hit with a stick, it opens up very quickly with the same type of bright tone with dark undertones and slight trash. I think they're smaller accent cymbals go for less than $100.

I have 6, 8, and 12 Wuhans and they work fine. The 12 inch is an "S" series.

Well I'm looking for a vintage jazz sounding splash. The kind jazz guys had on their kits from around the 30's to 60's. Essentially something bright quick and well splashy no weird "china" sounds. Not too trashy either, a little maybe. I mentioned the oriental splash just because it seemed to have a similar sound but again all my knowledge seems to be based on Zildjian web sites. I'm going to try and make a trip out of state some time over my Spring Break to visit a real music store.

Hey.. I think i shall be able to meet on your level here.. I am a big cymbal guy... i really do me research.. and ive been through alot of splashes.. even if you didn't mention the 10'' A custom splash i would have mentioned it here.. that is the best splash I have ever hit in my life.. i prefer it over the K custom or any higher end (or lower end) splash from anyother cymbal company.. I am a more sabian guy but dude this splash will complete you.. i guarantee.. and yes the 8'' is more bell like and more for quiet accents (in my opinion).. and the 10'' has a COMPLETELY diferend sound to the 8''.. I should be gettin one in about 3 weeks.. i ordered it down
Oh and if it helps.. Steve Smith and Carter Beuford (sorry I don't have time to find proper spelling of names) both use the 10'' A custom splash..so that should mean alot to you also..
I'm off

Here are my sizes and an extra thrown in

6" A Zildjian - I love this one
8" A Zildjian
10 A Zildjian - I found this one used and it is a great find!
6" A Custom Splash - very nice, but it wouldn't be the one I would start with. I found this one used as well.
10" K Zildjian Splash from about 2001 - It sounds good but I have to watch which combination I use.

I can also recommend the Sabian 10" HH spalsh as these sound great. If I were just starting, I think I would opt for either the 8" or the 10".

i don't like the fact that you can't really hear splashes properly in live rock settings except for during softer/texturally thinner sections, so i've since canned the usage of them. i personally prefer just a china hit or a relatively short open hi-hat hit.

Well, that's what splashes are for, sharp accents in softer dynamics. Conversely, you wouldn't bash a 27" china cymbal during a soft passage, would you?

Maybe you should take a look at Istanbuls and Bosphorus ? I'm pretty sure you'll find what you're looking for in their series.

A few sites with soundfiles:
www.cymbalsonly.com
www.superstitionpercussion.com

So I figure that the A Zildjian splases are a good way to go. I'm planning on taking an out of state trip sometime to travel to a better drum store and hopefully see some of these myself instead of just looking at online catalogs.

First thing I would recommend: www.cymbalsonly.com
Especially keep an eye on those Istanbul and Bosphorus splashes, many of them are simply amazing.
So, there would be also a second opportunity: Often there are greatsales on ebay, they don`t have to be used to be cheap, there are also some stores which sell them on ebay for good prices.

Or you go to a music store and walk through the splash-street.

For what musical style(s) and for which situations do you wanna use this splash?

Zildjian K Splash or Paiste Signature Splash. I would stay away from the A customs. The regular Avedis Splashes are nice, that's what Tim Alexander plays.
...and B8s sound like crap. :)
