Waw! This latin drummer is very great. So, I went to the concert of Pat Metheny Group at the AB in Brussels in 2002 (sorry for my English, I'm Belgian). It was wonderful: his playing was very interesting but I was very impressed when he started his drumsolo in "The Gathering Sky". He played an entire solo keeping the same rythm with his feet...!

At that time, I was just a saxplayer but Antonio and also Paul Wertico are the drummers that made me want to play the drums!

Of course, I'll put this video, the famous solo of the Modern Drummer Days 2003 http://youtube.com/watch?v=v2pQCEpCldQ
But I can't resist to put this video, a trio with Osmany Paredes and Luri Molina, when they played "Walkin'" of Miles :http://youtube.com/watch?v=TwLRy7rEtRk

Don't hesitate to go and see that page!http://www.drummerworld.com./drummers/Antonio_Sanchez.html

Keep Swingin'

He seems like a nice guy, down to earth and funny in person. I talked with him briefly at KoSA last year. He talked about building solos upon a simple motif and the left foot clave thing: he said that he didn't approach the latter so much as a technique/independence thing, but rather as something he just "felt" after being exposed to so much Cuban music.

He did a clinic last night at the Percussion Center here in Houston. I, unfortunately, was unable to attend, but I heard it was great.

Does anyone know when Antonio is giving his clinic tomorrow in NYC? All it says is the 29th of October and where it will be (Hudson Music).

Thinking of going,

Steph

His CD is great too. With Chris Potter, David Sanchez and Scott Colley. Great line-up. Burnin'.

So I was astounded to discover that Antonio Sanchez turned up only once when I searched for him.

In my opinion, one of the better jazz drummers out there right now. Massive chops, Berklee degree, and an expressiveness that rivals most.

Don't know who he is? He plays with numerous artists, notably Pat Metheny. Check him out on The Way Up, or Day Trip (which I have yet to buy).

Watch this vid for an amazing drum solo.

Also, check out his right hand technique, he seems to favour holding the stick fairly high up.

Anyone else love him?

I think you can also find him w the same trio (Metheny)
playing either "Vera Cruz" or "Bright Size Life". (Note:
The bass player, Richard Bona) is also on Youtube, playing
w Steps Ahead (Brecker, Mike Stern, Steve Smith, Maineri.)

Check out his album as a leader. It's called "Migration". It's really good. You can get it on iTunes. Metheny makes an appearance. Chris Potter on Sax, you can't go wrong.

I just found this image of his kit being torn down after a Pat Metheny Concert I saw in Minneapolis. Gorgeous!!! I had to share it. It was such a good concert.

Does anyone here have the album Ceremonial by Miguel Zenon? Antonio sounds like I've never heard him on this album. It is really amazing.

I saw Antonio with Pat Metheny and Christain McBride (Pat Metheny Trio) a few months back. He is definately the top Jazz drummer going down right now imho. He has insired my left foot clave experimentation.

I wouldn't even categorize him by saying the top jazz drummer. I think he's the top drummer right now. I don't know anyone else one the scene who can play drums with so much command over so many genres.

very true. Antonio is no doubt one of best drummers on the scene today. Like you said, no matter what genre he is playing in, his playing really delivers. From fusion with Pat Metheny Group, or more straight ahead stuff (i use the term 'straight ahead' very losely) with the Pat Metheny Trio, to more latin jazz with Danilo Perez or David Sanchez, to modern jazz with Scott Colley, Avishai Cohen, the list goes on man. here are some recomemend recordings...

Pat Metheny Trio/Day Trip
Antonio Sanchez/Migration
Avishai Cohen/Unity
Scott Colley/Architect of the Silent Moment
Pat Metheny Group/Way Up
Danilo Perez/Motherland

many more I can't think of right now.

I noticed this video on Antonio's DW page:

Check out how relaxed his right hand is.

Does anyone own a copy of Migration yet? I haven't been able to find it in Australia.
