What is in your opinion the best 5 piece rock config? (in general)

and secondly, what do you guys think is the best mid-range rock kit, my birthday is in some weeks and I'm hoping to get (together with the money I saved + job) around 1000-1200 euro. So in the range of Gretsh catalina rock club etc.

what do you say?

a tama superstar standard kit. it goes 12x9, 13x10, 16x16, 22x18, 14x5.5. with a bunch of add-ons available. right now i have my old one (when i say old i mean about three months old) on ebay for 429.99 with no bidders. great steal.

yeah, I heard a lot of good comments about that one. but I was wondering, since I love the "1 up, 2 down" config, Is the rock config still standard available? Because if you order custom shells you seem to overpay at least 500euro just because it's a custom order...

If you already have a decent set of hardware, you could try buying second hand. I've seen, for example, some well kept Starclassic shell sets being sold for around 1000 euros.

Best config would be TT 12x10, 14x12, 16x14, BD 22x18 and SD 14x5.5, like that:

But you might wanna look for something more subtle if you also play pop:
TT 10x8, 14x13, 16x13, BD 20x18, SD 13x5.5 Same setup.

Gretsch offers some nice club mod kits but in deeeper sizes.

Really? Starclassic maples? that seems a little hard to believe. Or maybe it isn't, but than I would doubt there wouldn't be anything wrong to it...
Don't you feel like that about second hand buys: I always doubt because "maybe there's something you don't immediatly see, but you find out within some time" and then your scr*wed..
for example I bought my 24" avedis ride on ebay, and indeed I got it, and it sound(ed) pretty good, but there were some bumps and scratches on it that the seller didn't (want to) mention, and I don't want that to happen again, so I'm a little suspicious to second hand shopping I don't know what you think about that?

That's the config I like! But I'd probably choose a little bigger drums, since I mostly play rock, stonerrock, hardrock kind of stuff...

My dreamsizes would probably be: 13x9, 16x16, 18x16, 24x18 and 14x6.5

But I can't decide what's the best brand/type to go for..

Starclassic Maples (kick & two toms) and Performers (kick, three-four toms and snare), yes, but just the shell sets with no hardware.

That's why you should always thoroughly check the merchandise yourself. I've bought a bunch of stuff second hand, and I've had no problems.

You're right, but the seller of the avedis I bought lived way to far to just go check it out...
Of course, when buying new drums, it's always worth to check it out, it's a much bigger spend. But I guess there's not a starclassic on the web every month (especially not for such a nice price), so do you have any other suggestions?

I know that the ice blue is beautiful, along with the tobacco fade. Just a suggestion.

Yamaha Stage Custom Advantage Nouveau is the best rock kit for the $1000 dollar price range imo. For a more expensive kit, i'd say the Yamaha Maple Custom is the best kit out there. Yamaha makes incredible drums. So well crafted and durable. Amazing sound. Next company I would look at is Mapex and their Pro M, M-Birch series.
