Has anyone flipped a drum upside down and switched heads. Does it still sound good. The reason is because I mounted my floor tom on my pearl icon rack. Then I never have to mess with the three leg b.s. I have the tom mount pointing down and I lift the floor tom to attach it because the mounting brackets are closer to the bottom. But if I flip it upside down I would be able to put the drum on like the other toms. Would this work? Please help.

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong here, but, with very few exceptions, the only difference between the top and bottom of a drum, soundwise, is what head you've got on it. Most of us use a different batter and reso, but if we didn't, assuming they were tensioned the same, you couldn't tell one head from the other.

They do it in Australia all the time : ^ P

I have seen people do this to get the toms lower. You will be able to tell right away if the tom mount is under too much strain from biazzaro placement.

I run both my 16" and 18" floors upside down, with legs, to get them lower. Works for me.

The only question I would have is what kind of mount you gonna use? If its a pearl ISS I would be carefull... The stress on the rims would be pretty severe! It might bend the rims. If its the kinda mount that attaches to the lugs at both the top and bottom rims you should be ok. If its a shell mount you should be ok too. So ya may want to check that out..

I have seen this done many times with no ill effects.

UPDATE... Ok So last night I Switched heads and did it up side down and it worked perfect just like you all said. It's so nice to mount all my toms the same. No more lifting the floor tom onto an upside down tom mount. Thanks guys!!
