I assume by build you mean assemble from a bare shell. I'm tackling this project right now actually. (Waiting on my stuff to get here from drumfoundry.com )

I spent about 270 shipped for the materials. This is before I go out and buy a better dril bit, some tung oil, and probably some other tool type things. Either way you can put together a really nice 10 ply maple drum for pretty cheap. If you want to get fancy you can pick up steam bent solid shells for about 120 bucks or so.

If this one goes well I might try a stainless steel one next. Going to go with some cool automotive paint on that one though.

It can be as cheap or expensive as you want to make it, depending on the shell size/thickness, wood, lug style and rim type (triple-flanged, die-cast, wood, etc.). I wrote an article on this for OnlineDrummer.com, check it out.

Great article KC. I really enjoyed it. Do you or anyone else on the site know of a book or somthing i could use to help me build my drum? The drummaker forum is helpful, but i would love it if i could have a step by step guide in front of me at all times, even though some cool people on this forum have already offered to help me (and i will definitley check with them to make sure im doing it right.) with my troubles.

Are you planning on buying a Keller shell or actually building a stave drum? Drumfoundry.com has some good Tutorials on laying out and setting up your drum. The best advice I've found on some of the building forums is using a Unibit and drilling from both sides to get a nice clean professional hole drilled.

I bought two shells on Ebay to practice on but if you order from drumfoundry I know they send you some scrap (you have to order the $0 scrap option) and you should definitely practice drilling on it. It's not really rocket science.. Measure x 100 times... drill... finish... assemble... enjoy!

Probably a maple shell to match my maple pearl session drum set. I definitley agree. Measure 100 times, drill once, dont mess up lol.

Just make sure you go get the Wiltons cake divider instead of buying their $30 version... that'll make sure you get your lugs in the right place. Worst case scenario you screw up a shell and you're out like 70 bucks... not like you have to buy the hardware over again and you'll still come out cheaper than buying a nice snare elsewhere.

Wiltons cake divider? What is that? A measuring tool like object?

Match your shell up to the proper size circle and it'll tell you where to put the lugs based on how many lugs you want to have ;) Similar to the mat sold on drumfoundry only without the hefty price tag.
