View Full Version : Fixing crappy bearing edges?

Can someone dig up a thread on how to enhance some bearing edges on a really crappy snare I have. I thought I heard someone here once talk about doing a little sanding, even routering to get the edge more better.
Right now this snare (emphasis on crappy) has pretty flat edges, as in perpendicular, and I'm wondering if sanding an angle on it would improve performance.
Thanks.

I have a router mounted underneath my work bench so the router bit sticks out on the table top.
I use a 45 degree router bit to cut my edges. Take a little bit at the time from the inside and the outside, until you have the desired depth. Turn the shell in the direction that the router turns, otherwise you get burn marks.
After that, you send them smooth, and then you treat them with a wax, or some people use vaseline.

Ive done some bearing edges in the past but not lately... You also have to cut the snare beds. and that can be kinda tricky.... Got a good drum shop in your area? And im not talking GC or a place like that. I had to have new edges cut on an older snare I restored and found a shop that did that kind of work. cost me about 60 bucks for the top and bottom edges and getting the snare beds done right. I was really happy with the work they did.
Just a suggestion..

You really don't need a drum shop so much as a woodworking connection. =) It's all about the good woodworking skills.

wouldnt re-doing bearing edges mess up lug placement and snare wire placement?

Why would it? Especially if your drum has a proper snare bed. You might use a few more turns on the tension rods (i'm assuming you're referring to the tension rods as lugs) but most of what you're cutting will be on the inside of the drum and the overall depth wouldn't be greatly effected.

http://www.drumfoundry.com and check out the tutorials link...
It's basically a spot on the snare side where you cut the shell down some. The theory is that it gets the snare wires more flush with the head.
