Here is the deal, I'm getting a new drum set (Pork Pie) and I'm trying to decide bewteen a wrap or a lacquer. I gig around a fair amount, so I need a kit to be durable. However, I also do a few sessions here and there.

I'm interested in a blue sparkle, which can be done as a lacquer or as a wrap. I'm interested in people sharing their thoughts and/or experiences.

Thanks!

I think its just a matter of opinion. Wraps give you a lot more complex possibilities, and you can always change them later if you decide you don't like the color. Laquers have a nice shine, have a more natural look, and are more durable than wraps (if the wraps aren't well installed).

I think its safe to say Pork Pie will wrap the drums perfectly. I'd say a wrap really. If lacquer is damaged is a problem. You can rewrap drums and altho they dont not to show the damage anyway

Lacquer is pretty sweet when you see that **SHINE** But wraps can come in many styles that are quite appealing. so its all your opinion i guess.
Satin is awesome also its on my set right now.

If you are taking them in and out of buildings and cars etc, the wrap will last longer and protect the shell better.

I'd go with a wrap you'll thank me after a cymbal or mic stand falls into them and that will happen if you plan on gigging with that kit.Laquer finishes look sweeter than a wrap but not near as durable.if your gigging out go with a wrap.

Huh ??? No....wraps are far more durable than lacquers.....if you're gigging....wraps are the way to go! They have some great looking wraps nowadays that look great in the lights and you won't freak out if something gets too close! :)

Ask Bill how many different blue sparkles they have and go for it!!

I prefer laquer, but I don't gig much.
Wraps are less expensive, too.
Sure you don't wanna buy a 7 piece Pork Pie? No long wait...

Hateplow-
What are you doing selling those babies? You need to hang on to them! DW Exotic or not, you have a set of Pork Pie drums that will give anything a run for its money. DON'T DO IT!!

I appreciate your concern.
I had to do a lot of soul searching before letting them go. And, hell, maybe nobody will buy them, in which case my wife will take my life.
It's a long story, and quite an interesting one...but I'll save that for my thread next week entitled "My New DW Exotics"

If your on the road go with the wrap. If it is a studio kit or you have a butt load of dough and don't care if you laquer gets beat up get a laquer. I like matte or satin finishes over exotics like bubinga or kurillian birch because they don't show as many scratches as laquer finishes. I have a set of designers in bubinga matte at it looks like I don't have scratch on it.

Get whatever looks nicest to you. There is no diffrence in sound and with good cases a lacquer can be well protected.

personally i like wraps. Not only are they durable, but it opens up the finishes quite well. Also, nothing looks better under the stage lights than a sparkle or a glass glitter. I have a starclassic that is a beautiful dark cherry fade that is currently being rewrapped to go to purple and silver glass glitter stripes.

fun fun fun

I'm assembling a Kellar Shell snare here once my goodies arrive from Drum Foundry... She's going to get a navy blue stain with a pearl topcoat and then automotive grade clear coat. If you do it right you can get a good solid finish that will last a long time... Most people just go cheap and it shows. If this snare comes out good I may get fancy and use some house of kolor stuff to paint a drum that'll rival sparkle wraps ;)

thats why i emphasized the "if installed properly" part- unfortunatley, I've played on two low end kits where the wrap wasn't well, and they warped and twisted terribly-
However, with Pork Pie, that shouldn't be a problem. For gigging, wraps are a definite plus, and you can't deny that some of those finishes (i'm partial to the Blue Pearl types) are amazing. But theres something to be said about a nice laquer fade for a studio kit

I always thought lacquer was much better than wraps.

Laquer finishes look better but are not durable.
