View Full Version : Considering small set 10-13-16

I'm considering a kit in smaller sizes. Small is easier to play/reach (playing on an e-drum has given me ideas!), easier to tune, easier to carry and most importantly, less noise. I'd go with maple to have the least aggressive and warmest sound. Another way to lessen the volume would be a drum shield, but that's kinda weird when playing in small bars. Has anyone seen the following set?
Not counting custom brands, only yamaha offers these sizes in their absolute line. Not really a problem since I own a beech custom, but then again, the jump from beech to maple custom might not be worth the hassle.
Delites do not have custom orders (designer/SQ2 is way too expensive for me to consider) and if they did they do not offer 13" snares. Neither do starclassics. Pearl and mapex I do not like. Renown maple does not offer these specs either and I guess usa custom will be as highly priced as DW.
Maybe I should stick with my current set after all :)
Anyway, if you've seen such a set, show it plz.

David Garibaldi plays 10, 13, 16 toms, but in the 2 up 1 down config. I really like it because you have a 16" floor and a good range between toms while keeping them evenly spaced in size.
As for 13" floor, there's a guy here (I can't believe I forgot his name! idiot!) who built himself a kit with a 13" floor if I remember correctly. Really nice kit too. There's no reason it can't work, although I find 14" a little lacking in bottom end to be used as a floor so I can't see myself digging a 13" too much. But hey, different strokes for different folks, right?
Also, even though you don't like pearl, if you're really after warmth mahogany is going to be your wood of choice. MHX masters is made of mahogany and will be a bit warmer than it's maple counterpart. Maybe check them out.

I thought these would be considered large or at least medium sizes. Or do you mean less drums?

It's all relative. With a 20 BD and 13 SD, a 13 FT/TT isn't that small. In mahogony it would have more bottom end than most 14" maple toms.

Yeah, I've also considered tama's bubinga but it might be too aggressive?

First, the sizes are smaller than what's the norm for a fusion/rock set (13 FT, 13 SD, 20 BD, 13 HH...). Second, it's only a 5 pc which is standard. What's large to you?

Not that it was a question for me, but
I'd say a drumset with a 18'' bass drum, 10'' rack tom and 13'' flor tom is small, what you have there is a bit larger than my standart - 20'' bass drum, 10'' rack tom and 14'' flor tom :-)

I would go for a 10, 14, 16 myself. I have a 14 on the floor and it just gives me the bottom end i need.
But, i do agree with you. I could ever get the hang of kits with these huge 12, 13, 16" toms.
Tune em' low and hit em' hard. Thats how i get big sound = ).

My thoughts exactly Raymond:) Or even a 16" bass drum these days is not particularly out there. I played a 16" floor tom a while back and it seemed absolutely huge. The shop configuration of a small or club kit is usually 16 BD, 10 RT, 14 FT, 14 SN like the gretsch bebop kits (I think this is what they're called) and similar funky little kits. Anyway, I'm just being pedantic. Don't mind me.

yeah, 16'' bass drums are really cool! Too bad I don't have one, and neither a 16'' flor tom, 16 inches are too much for me lol
I'm strongly considering to get a 18'' bass drum for general use
