New drum heads

Okay its time i upgraded my drum heads as I have never done this. I still have the custom mapex ones that came with my kit a year ago. I have no idea what ones to choose or what to look for when I'm choosing them. Does anyone have any ideas? Maybe pinstripes? Cheers, Malakian

Trust me , everyone has lots of different ideas and they swear by them. No short answer , meanwhile, Check out the topic dealing with gear, heads and stick etc , there is a lot of info dealing with that topic. Very basically you have clear , coated , dampened , hydraulic and then you have lots of different manufacturers. I have a cupboard full of partially used heads before I decided on the ones that I now use. It's an expensive exercise and the type of music you play also comes into it and how you tune them and what head you use as the resonant head etc etc. Thats the beauty of drums, they can be so variable and personal, the variations are huge. How about the ultra-general applicable to anything set-up then?

snare: coated ambassador over ambassador snare side
toms: clear emperor over clear ambassador
kick: clear P3 and then port your stock reso


if you don't like remo, you can try evans with g2 over g1 on toms, coated g1 over genera hazy 300 on snare, and probably an EMAD or EQ4 on the kick.

See, I told you that there is a huge variety of different information that you will get. Ask the guys in your local drum shop and pay good money for some good heads and one thing I can guarantee is that they will sound better than the ones that came standard with the kit. That I can guarantee. If they're good shells start with pinstripe, clear or coated and from there you will have a fair idea of what to get next time. But they will sound better than what you have. If its a cheaper kit you might find the dampened powerestrokes or similiar sound good.

True, though Evans takes the lead over remo in bass heads. P3 cannot cope with emad or eq4. For toms & snare, both are equal.
Make sure the bass reso has a muffling ring like P3, eq3 or remad. Some stock heads don't come with a ring and are very bright.

Anyone tried the new remo powersonic?
