hello
I'm going to buy a pro m kit and I've got two questions:
1. is that true that pro m 14/5,5 snare sucks?
2. what do you think about pearl omar hakim signature snare? are there anything better in it's price range? maybe chad smith sig? I live in Poland and I can't get pork pie snares or something like that, just the main brands.
I'm playing post rock/alternatice/jazz/electronic something. hard to explain.

I wouldn't say the Pro M snare sucks. The Omar Hakim snare is one of my favorite snares ever. Britt89 has the snare so he can give you more details.

dont get that snare, try to get a tama snare, preferably the mike portnoy melody master or the joey jordison signature snare, they both sound good i played em, the pearl ones sounded kinda jazzey in my opinion, i thought the melody master had a hevy metal sound but that might be just the way it was tuned

First of all, the JJ snare is Pearl not Tama, and second of all, support your reason in why he should not buy the Omar Hakim.

Yes, having read his musical style, why do you think he'd be interested in a snare suitable for heavy metal?
I have the Hakim pearl snare and very nice it is too, particularly if your style is on the lighter side. I would not recommend it if you are playing in a rock situation aas i've found it lacks a little in projection and the tone is too high to be appropriate in a gig situation, and is not quiite satisfying if you're recording with rocky guitars. Definitely a nice snare to have in a collection as it's smaller diameter makes it an excellent auxilliary snare.

and I'm definitelly looking for a jazzy sounding snare. and I really don't like the sound of both Portnoy and Jordison, and I suppose their snares are sounding pretty familiar, if they're not even using their sigs. nothing interesting to me, but thanks for your input :)
I want to use it as my main snare, but it won't have to compete with heavy guitars, so I think it will cut just enough.
do you have any links for omar hakim sig sound?

maybe you could look into the chad smith snare. apparently its very responsive to even the lightest hits, so may be good for ghosting during jazz. and obviously it gets through when playing louder.
if i had the money, that would probably be the one id get.
also, i had a JJ snare. please, dont go anywhere near it. Its not for the styles you talk about at all. its very poppy (as in a 'pop' kind of sound, not pop kind of music), not a great deal of cut through, and just generally struggles. JJ doesnt use the snare as much as he uses the toms, and it shows up when you play the snare, as it lacks a lot of bite and struggles to cut through.

First, I have to give high compliments to Jonescrusher's avatar photo of Morrissey from The Smiths days. Very, very nice. Great lad, great band.
OH snare sounds nice. However, some jazz purists would bristle at the idea that a 13" diameter snare could be used for jazz. Reason? Decreases space for brush work. Not my opinion, but some of my jazz friends would hesitate with a 13" as a main snare for jazz.

Good to know I'm not the only fan on this board, might get that Mike Joyce thread started up...

Yes, fantastic band and super important in the history of British music. Joy Division and The Smiths are at the supreme height of popular music--very few can match their brilliance and historical relevance. Amazing bands/music.
Mike Joyce was a very decent drummer--he played a Yamaha 9000 (Recording Custom) on the last two albums, The Queen Is Dead and Strangeways, Here We Come. Same kit that Boris Williams used for The Cure on Head on the Door and Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me.
