Has anybody got charts for Everybody Needs Somebody? I've got a chart that just shows a simple hi-hat and snare + BD 4/4 groove but the version of the song my band wants to do is trickier - sounds more like like a snare-based shuffle with big-band style fills.

Please post a link to the specific version of the song you want.

I listened to it on Yahoo music and it was just the simple 4/4 that your described.

Thanks for your comment - sadly I only have it as a windows media player file - just tried to upload into this reply and got "invalid file". Ho hum.

I play that song once in a while, and it's straight. The way the keys and git chop wood on it forces a tight, straight beat imho. I could see perhaps adding a shuffle feel with ghosts on the snair maybe?

I'm not sure I've ever heard a straight 8 version. Isn't the version in the movie and on the soundtrack a shuffle?

I just d/l'd a fresh copy from our band's server, I'll listen when I get home and maybe post a snippet to listen to.

OK I just listened to the version that is a reference recording we use for a medley of BB tunes, and the Blues Brothers version sample on iTunes. Here's what they had in both, hope I wrote it right! Top line is snare, bottom bass. Hat played on the beat.

Thanks Groove and Spreggy. I agree the soundtrack version seems to be a shuffle and Spreggy's chart looks very close to the groove I can hear, this helps me out. Any suggestions on best way to play the fills leading into the horn refrain? Thanks everyone for your interest and to Spreggy staying up so late - time of your post ten-to-two a.m!

Time zones mate, it was 9:50 here in NY ;^ ) . My gamer late night posting days are long behind me. I like hammering out a couple loud single stroke triplets for that fill, just straight ahead. In this band we have one male and 2 fem fronts, and they choreograph it pretty cool.

Check out the versions by Solomon Burke (the original of this song I believe) and Wilson Pickett (who specifically credits Solomon Burke in his version) both feature slightly different takes. Pickett's version for example, seems to be quarters on the hi-hat, with the bass drum providing the shuffle feel by playing some of the swing eighths (his version is also a good bit faster than Burke's)

Classic Soul Music is the motherlode of groove.

Absolutely!

Thanks for the tip - I'll look out for the Burke and Pickett versions
