View Full Version : Wrap questions for y'all....

A couple of questions for the good folks here. I am delivering my starclassic to a professional drum wrapper guy here in vegas. Already checked him out and he does great work -- and guitar center recommends him.

Here is what i am getting and the price:

- 10, 12, 14 and 22 wrapped in my choice of finishes (no price difference.... including the usually more expensive Champagne Sparkle).

- Kick drum holes filled and glued with Birch dowels (to turn my non-virgin to a virgin)

- New natural maple kick drum hoops (to save my original hoops in-case i want to ever go back to the Dark Cherry Fade). Hoops can either remain natural, have a matching in-lay or have a wrap on them.

- all hardware will be removed, as will the badges, and everything will be placed back on for me. Total cost will be $385 and will take a week.

So here are my questions. I cant decide a few things.

WRAP: Lime Green Sparkle, Purple Glass Glitter, Gold Sparkle, Gold Glass Glitter or Champagne Sparkle (i own a DW in Champagne Sparkle... i love it, but i may want a different color for this kit).

HOOPS: Wrap over the whole hoop or go the classic "in-lay" look?

all opinions are good -- except for the "keep your kit as is" or "i hate wraps... what about a new laquor". I like sparkles...

I'm a blue guy but that Gold on the Tama kit looks superb. Oh yeah hoops like the Tama also not inlayed. and the price seems great also. Its basically a new kit and its done by a pro with I assume some warranty.,

i am leaning in that direction as well -- but also, he had mentioned that he can do a "jelly bean" kit for me for the same price. I sort of think they are cool and funky -- but i dont know if i would be ready to pull the trigger on something like that. But it is unique.

what do you think?

I'm into the gold (Tama Kit) myself, looks good. Combined with the traditional in-lays on the hoops should be sweet. 385 for everything sounds like a great deal, post pictures when you’re done and good luck. Hey by the way I checked out your music, very impressive stuff you got there keep up the good work. Great name, Jesus or a Gun.

the green or tama gold, wrap completely covering the hoops
or jellybean, i'm not sure, it could look really cool
either way, not inlayed

I like this one.....not on your list but hey...

If not this one the Gold looks really good in the sample I have.....
Of all the samples...Gold, tangerine, and turquoise look the best under lights

that one is hot -- but i just dont dig turquoise that much. I dont think i even know how to spell it.

now im thinking.... i am really torn between the gold and green. I love both of them, and i looked at them together... they REALLY look good together. I am thinking of asking him if he could do stripes -- sort of like this:

http://www.porkpiedrums.com/media/images/products/kit_stripe.jpg

im sure it would increase the cost, but i wonder how much? I was thinking green maybe on the outside with the gold sparkle as the center stripe :)

The jellybean would scare me if it ever came time to sell them, and the striped effect looks OK but only if its one piece per drum and not separate pieces of wrap. I would be afraid of all of the seams and peeling etc.

"turquoise"....I think that's right....hehe

That would look really nice...I haven't seen a gold and green striped kit....ever

I would bet it would double you cost...there is a lot more labor involved when doing stripes..

What about a gold with silver glass stripe..putting the stripe 1/4 up on the shell instead of center....or a white pearl stripe centered on the shell

Man the possibilities are endless......Just remember it's all part of the fun......My advice get something unique..this is your secondary kit...

yeah i will ask him about the stripes. He has very good prices.... making my kick a virgin costs me $10 -- adding the hoops were $50 total. So who knows.

i do want something unique. I like to stand out -- i like to be bold, which is even though the gold is my favorite color, i am thinking the green just because it is bright, fun and brash. Plus i already have a classy kit. :)

here is a kit that he did -- the green wrap that i like. Although he has all wood hoops on it.

That looks killer......All of the ones you like will look badass...

Go with what you originally thought....just as in my case with the tangerine...I always wanted that wrap....I spent a week finishing it natural...only to rewrap in Tangerine....

Your gut feeling is usually what is right in the long run.....GO GREEN

Damn he has nice taste in lugs.....

I love the Gold Sparkle. I wanted to get a Starclassic Performer in that finish for the longest time.

I also like Silver Sparkle, Black Sparkle. Blue Sparkle can be nice too, it brings back memories of the Ludwig kit I played back in jazz band in middle school.

funny -- i asked about 4 women. all of them said green without hesitating. Which makes me want it even more :)

Fat Elvis

okay, so I talk to the drum wrap guy -- adding stripes will only add $20 to the price, so that is the direction i am going. I dropped off my starclassic to him and gave him a deposit and told him i would call him tomorrow with the colors i wanted.

so, the funny thing is that now this opens up the discussions of combinations. Now, just so you know, i really am not a fan of red, blue or black in general, so i have left those out. I have taken a look at the swatches i have, and here is what i am thinking:

favorites: gold-silver-gold and purple-silver-purple

your thoughts? I think its really a cool look -- and gives it a very custom feel -- like a pork pie or OCDP, which i am a fan of their finishes.

As a drummer dude, chicks dig the purple. A buddy of mine has a green sparkle and a purple sparkle, both stunners. Purple, over the years, I've seen fewer kits, so I'd tend towards that just 'cause it's a little less common. Great prices. Man, the wrap from precission alone costs that much. I'd go with inlay on the hoops. Traditional and classic. No on the stripes. Will be an "outdated" look in 10 years. Ask yourself "what would Elvis do?" Purple.

Fat Elvis
03-12-2007, 10:55 AM
well, im not too worried about 10 years. Paying $400 every ten years to have a kick ass kit is worth it to me. Right now -- i think both EP and I would do the tri-color stripes. Totally unique, wild, custom and a real eye-catcher. Plus, i love the color combination.

Besides, the way this guy is wrapping the kit (the adhesive he uses) i can take off the wrap with some effort, and the original finish will be in perfect shape. No, for me it will defenately be stripes. Most likely the tri-color purple-silver-gold -- possibly the purple-silver-purple. And I am going with the complete wrap on the hoops -- i dont want an in-lay for this style (the classiness will be lost on it).

hey man, its vegas. This kit will scream it!

PURPLE ,baby! PURPLE! For the stripes the purple-silver-purple one.
or if you have to the green-silver-green one will work.

Purple and Green are my favorite colors.

As a drummer dude, chicks dig the purple.

So THAT's why I didn't have any chicks as a drummer in a band in high school... and this whole time I thought it was because I wasn't particularly good looking...

...Well I'm sure it was alittle of both :)

I have a request then.....tangerine glass with a silver glass stripe

You make it sound so easy......I still can't figure out how you got all your pics in your sig line....

Have you decided on a color yet?

Jammin Sam quoted me $430 for my sizes....I am going to wait until yours are done before I ship any shells..Take a lot of pictures of the new wrapped shells...especially the edges and overlap

he usually does want the hardware off, but i did not have time so he said that he will do it for me at no extra charge. I took off the heads and rims -- he will remove the lugs and badges.

i am still tossing it around. I am honestly thinking the tri-color, since i think it looks cool and i cant decide between the g-s-g and the p-s-p. Although between the two i think i like the contrast of the purple-silver-purple better.

I iwll take lots of pictures -- you can bet on it. I may even go over mid-week to look at the progress. He invited me to do so. He said he also guarantees his work, so if i am not happy for whatever reason, he will redo it.

cant beat that.

so what do you all think of the tri-color? I think it will be that or the purple-silver-purple. I need to call him!!! help! im so bad at making decisions.

here is the tangerine -- although the jammin sam pic does not really look like it actually looks.

I am not liking that tang/silver combo.....maybe if the stripe was positioned 1/3 of the way up the shell....damn it gets me thinking though

I vote for the tri-color...totally unique, I have never seen a kit with that color combination....

Pretty cool with a wrap they are more durable then other finishes if a cymbal stand falls into them you won't. be freaking out as with a laquer finish can't. wait to see the pic's. I also like that your going with a virgin bass drum too cool.

How difficult was it to do? How long did it take?

Did it effect your sound at all?
