View Full Version : If it HAD to be a 9-piece...

Fusssion's thread about what would you have if you could only have a four-piece got me thinking. What if you could only have a nine-piece or larger set? What brands, etc? While I would never play on a four-piece, except for a few exceptional gigs, it was a good exercise to think it through (http://www.drummerworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=24403).

I currently play this six-piece at http://www.drummerworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18719. If I had to expand it to a nine-piece or larger I would get a 20-inch bass drum (it would add some great melodic possibilities with the existing 18-inch bass drum), a six-by-six inch tom and a 16 by 16 tom.

Please, no big kit vs. small kit debates. If a big kit drummer can be asked to consider what four piece he'd play if he had to, then a small-kit drummer can be asked to consider what nine-piece kit he would play if he had to.

Cool idea, and fair enough. Since I have a Ludwig 5 piece. 26, 15, 16, 18 and snare. Add to that 1 Roland SPD-S (have that), 2 Flying Dragon Direct Drive single pedals w/Roland KD-7 kick triggers attached (have those) and a Korg Wavedrum. 9.

Hmmm, I currently have a seven piece, although I don't use my 13" tom. I use 10,12,14,16 and a 22" bass with a 6.5X14 or 5.5X14 snare. I don't normally use two snares at the same time on the kit.

I think I would add a 15" floor on the left, an 8" tom, and perhaps an 18" floor set up like a gong drum. Alternately, I would use a second snare on the kit, maybe a 13", in place of one of the floor toms.

Personally, I like having lots of voices to choose from, as long as I don't have to haul everything around to gigs! I don't play a lot of fills with my regular band, but I like to have just the right sound available when I need it. Plus I like to stretch out some when I'm on my own.

I have 8 now. 8, 10, 12, 13, 16, 22 Bass Drum. 13 x 6.5 Musashi main snare, and have tuned my 14 x 5.5 Taye snare real low and loose as a side snare.

But given the choice I would have the 6 piece Gretsch Maple set I saw today at Seminole Music. Lacquered natural wood finish...absolutely stunning.

I play a 7 piece already, so I would add a 20" Gong tom ( I think that's what they called)
and a 16" floor tom next to my hi hat.

i would add an 18" floor tom ( tom my 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 22, 14 snare and 12snare). That would really add some bottom to my kit.

I'm eventually going to acquire an eight piece but if it had to be a nine piece I would put a seven inch tom with it.
Here's what I'm going to acquire:
Mapex M Birch (8,10,12,14,16 in toms; 14x5.5in snares x2, 22x18in kick)

I got a 5 peice as it is (12,14,16,22,14 snare), but I REALLLY want to add on, so ive been thinking about this for a while.

I would add an 8", 10" tom, 13x6.5 snare, and I would add three bass drums- I would remove my 22", add two 20"s, and a big ol' 26". I could add a looooootttttttttt more, but ill stop here.

You know, come to think of it, I might skip the extra floor tom and go with a 26" bass drum. I played one in the past and loved it! I'm not sure how I would configure the kit though...

Ok, coming from a guy who plays a 4piece or sometimes a 5....

12x4 Main Snare
14x5 Side snare w/ wood hoops

Mounted Conga
12x9 Rack
Mounted Djembe

14x14 Floor
16x16 Floor
16x16 Floor on left side tuned lower than previous 16"

20x18 Bass drum

Ha....I would never want that many drums, though for the pure hypothetical excersise it was great.

HAAAA!!! Cool......I'm glad I inspired you! :)

Anyhow...I play a 6 piece now (see my signature) ......and I 'd probably add an 18" floor tom, or some type of gong-drum....and either a) another snare and an 8", b) another snare and an "octoban" type drum,...or c) 2 "octoban" types....lower pitched, longer....

My current kit is a 9 piece.

I do not think I would make any changes. Perhaps I would change my 13 rack tom for a 14.

2 22
1 18
1 16
1 14
1 12
1 10
1 8
1 14 x 6.5

All my kits are big, but that does not mean I use the whole set everytime I use that set. I have two kits that are 15 piece, but I never use all the pieces at once.....no stage is that big.

I'd do what I've been planning forever and add an 18x16" kick on a remote pedal.

That would bring my drum count to 9.

22 and 18" kicks
10, 12, 14 and 16" toms
14 and 12" snares
18" rototom

that would be amazing... and I'd have to buy a bigger car.

- 10", 12", 14" and 16" toms
- a 14" main snare and a 12" auxiliary snare
- a 20" x 17" main kick and an 18" x 14" auxiliary kick + a 24" x 18" kick for those sensitive moments...

I like how you'd get different size bass drums. I think it's kind of silly to get two bass drums the exact same size, unless you have them tuned differently - why just not get one bass drum and a double pedal? Different sounding bass drums open up all sorts of melodic possibilites. I think it's good to have different sized bass drums for the same reason you'd have different sized toms or snares.

I think that I would add a gong bass and a 6x10 snare drum!
