I just wanted to hear peoples opinions on these 3 hats, and share some experiences with them as far as how well they work with rock. I know they all have a wide range, so thats why its become a difficult decision for me to narrow it down to one. Id appreciate any feedback, thank you.

My teacher had an 80's era pair of Quick Beats...VERY tight sounding. The beggining of Closer from NIN is a really good example of how they sound closed. When open however, they really didn't have a good slosh. Very brittle, harsh, high pitched white noise sound.
I've owned 14" A Custom Mastersounds for 8 months, im iffy on them. Closed, they sound alright, but i had grown very fond of the incredibly tight sound of my teachers Quick Beats, and the Mastersounds are no where near as tight sounding....i have to physically use my strength to push down on the pedal REALLY hard to get that tight enough sound. Open however, it's pure bliss. Wonderful, full bodied, bright slosh. And when played half open, it's a XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX miracle how great they sound.
New Beats...never played em. I tapped some at GC, sounded like the Quick Beats but with a bit more body, better slosh.
If i were you though, i'd find a vintage pair, same price probably. I've heard nothing but great reviews on the old New Beats.
Hell Buddy Rich used them.....are you saying Buddy's wrong hahah.

Awesome response, thank you. I'd like to hear more peoples opinions. I forgot to state that whichever one I choose, it will be Traditional finish, not brilliant.

To me,the New Beats would be the best route to go because they are versatile hats. The Quick Beats were designed mainly to be used for tight grooves, not sloshy,hard-rock blues type stuff. As to the Mastersounds,I am totally ignorant and can offer no opinion. As Aqualung has said, maybe a vintage pair of New Beats might be in order; my own pair was made in the 1960s when the New Beats were first introduced and they have served me well since...

Here is my opinion but you really need to use your ears and let them be the final judge!
Quick Beats - 13" is THE size in this model - Vinnie favored these at one time. The 14" are really odd sounding to my ear! I have owned two different pair of 14" Quick Beats and sold them in favor of 14" New Beats both times. The action seems slow. The 13" model doesn't shre these qualities(?). hey seem to be crisper and have a lighter sound.
New Beats - 13" or 14", you can't go wrong with these. They are excellent all purpose hi hats and are fairly nondescript but in a good way!
Mastersounds - I have a pair of 14" K Mastersounds from about 2001. These are suited more for jazz but could be used for Rock. But the biggest problem is that they will have to miked to be present against the guitars! They don't stack up against amplification very well! I don't know about the A series or the A Custom series, but when I was talking about the nondescript qualities of the New Beats, these can descriptive in a bad way. What I am saying is that they don't blend well in rock music.. When used in a rock manner, the start to remind of the Milli Vanilli hi hat sound. If you are going to play mostly Rock (and you need to be honest about this with yourself), then in a Mastersound you probably want to go with the A series Mastersounds.

I think that they were designed for the Funk and Disco work of the mid to late 70s era as well as for recording. To me the 13" would be fine as I have played on these, but the 14" just isn't hip to my ear!

Right on, thanks so much. Tomorrow I will be purchasing my cymbal set-up and Im trying to get everything situated. I was going to do K Dark thin crashes, but decided to go with A customs instead..heres what I've chosen..
14" A Mastersound hats
18" A Custom projection crash
19" A Custom medium crash
21" A Sweet ride
18" Oriental china trash
..Before I chose the A custom crashes, I was going to do an 18 K Dark thin crash and a 19 K Dark thin crash, but changed my mind (Durability and price). The quote I got, with the K Crashes included was $900 flat for everything (Good deal?), so by switching to AC's it will be a little cheaper, not by much, but some. Let me know what you guys think. Thanks!

if you want a great ride try to find a vintage ping ride. my teacher has one and it is amazing, the new ones sound like garbage to me. i'll stick with my 2002 ride
