Yep....if you could ONLY put together a 4 piece kit ....what sizes would you get, what company would you go with???
NOTES:
This does not include cymbals so don't mention them
You can customize anything you want, or order stock sizes, ..doesn't matter as long as the final kit is a 4 piece kit!
SHOW PICS IF YOU HAVE THEM!

I've already got it, Ludwig vistalite, mid 70's - 24" Bass drum, 14" Mounted tom & 16" Floor tom, barbershop swirl in amber & wine - I have a matching snare but use a 6.5" Supraphonic with it - perfect!!!

I have already a 4 piece! :-) well, I use and additional snare drum, I can't live without two snares, the music I play just requires it

Strange how 4-piece kits suddenly have become something "basic", calling it "only" a 4-piece kit. In the old days when drummers with monster kits named Mike didn't exist, 4-piece was the thing, just look at Papa jo Jones, Ringo, and so on...
I have a 4-piece setup and I would rather put it this way: it got as much as four drums!
And the sizes are traditional: 12x08, 14x14, 18x14, 14x5,5.
And ok then, I have a 6-piece too... :P

I did not mean, nor did I imply that a 4 piece kit has suddenly become "basic". I think it's very IN again, and I think they're extremely functional, and I think if people gave them a shot ....they'd find they'd get a heck of a lot more use out of it then they think!

No one is knocking 4 piece kits,...nor are they slamming bigger kits. I love the 4 piece, and that's why I posted this thread. I use a 6 piece because of the range of music we cover,...but I find that I'm mostly utilizing the drums in the 4 piece configuration.
I just wanted to see what people either HAVE, or what would they CREATE! :)

Holy cow! I wasn't aware of this company. The drums look unbelieveable!
As I live in Norway, I KNOW my next kit will be a Kuma.. I'll take dad's car and drive to Finland.
Great thing too; the drums aren't mass produced on the other side of the planet, nor using material destroying the rain forest. =)

And I'll bet they'll can match high-end kits like old Gretsch's, GMS, Presicion Drums, etc...

9x13
16x16

I think a Ludwig 16x22" Kick, 8x12" tom and a 16x16" Floor Tom (and I am not certain but this may be the Ringo sizes on the toms). A Ludwig Supraphonic Snare (5 x14, okay maybe a 6-1/2x14") to round it out!

I`d definitly take a Tama Starclassic Performer. At the moment the best I have played so far.
I`d take a 20x16" bass drum (unfortunatly Tama just has 20x18"), 10x8" tom, 14x14 floor tom, Yamaha Elvin Jones sig Snare drum
What a dream line-up =)
Karl
well, I currently own a 4 piece Ayotte custom: 12x8, 16x16, 24x16, with an anton fig to top it off. Gorgeous kit (love my baby :D).
But I am thinking about getting a smaller kit on the side. Something like 12x8, 14x14, 20x14. It would be fun to mess around on a smaller kit, not to mention that it's much easier to fit in a car.

that's all I ever play is (4) piece kits my little kit(David)consists of Pearl Exports selects(1998)
10 x 8 tom
14 x 12 mounted tom
20 x 16 bass drum
14 x 5.5 snare
my big kit(Goliath)consists of Yamaha Tour Customs(1984)
12 x 10 tom
16 x 16 floor-tom
24 x 16 bass drum
14 x 5.5 snare drum
since I gig out a lot I like the (4) piece configuation so many advantages:
it takes up less room on the stage
quicker to set-up & tear-down
and if you can't. play a (4) piece kit what makes you think you're gonna be able to play a (9) piece kit.there ain't. nothing worse then seeing a drummer behind a massive kit and all he or she plays is just the hi-hat,snare & bass drum.I'm considering trading in my Yamaha kit on the new Ludwig Bonham reissue Vistalites.I just like the ride placement and feel of a (4) piece kit.

If money wasn't an option, then I'd go for a Gretsch Broadkaster 18"x14", 12"x8", 14"x14" and 14"x5" in black. Realistically, seeing as money is always a consideration, I'd settle for a Natural Lacquer Pearl DLX from the 80's- same configuration but with a 20"x14" kick instead.
I ONLY play four piece kits nowadays. So much easier to set up, perfect ride placement, and forces me to vary my fills more.

Yamaha, Highwood, or another custom drum maker.
18"x16" bass drum
12" x 8" rack tom
14" x 14" floor tom
14" x 5.5" snare drum or a 14" x 4"
In maple or an exotic wood perhaps. All natural/satin finish.
This kit is fitted mostly for jazz I believe, but can def. be used for many other styles of music too. I almost have this setup, except my bass drum is 20" instead of 18". I just love the look of an 18" bass drum, something about it that looks real compact but also would pack a lot of punch.

Gretsch Maple drums.
14" Snare
10"tom
12" or 13"tom (not sure)

Some kind of coated heads probably. Most likely a natural type of finish, nothin fancy.

Sorry, but I have two kit setups and these are customized to my specs...
Kit One:
Ludwig Clear Vistalite
16 x 24 kick
8 x 12 rack tom
14 x 16 floor tom
7 x 14 Black Beauty hand hammered snare
or
7 x 14 Zildjian snare (the one that was made years back w/Noble & Cooley)
Kit Two:
Ludwig...black glass sparkle with flames starting from the resonant side of each drum
(it would be a painted finish, not a wrap finish)
17 x 24 maple kick (12 ply)
8-1/2 x 12 birch rack tom (10 ply)
14-1-/2 x 16 birch floor tom (10 ply)
7-1/2 x 14 maple snare (20 ply)
All drums would have the "mini classic" style lugs, kicks would have the "curved"
spurs, and toms would all have the RIMS mounts.

I want to eventually make my Radio King set a four piece. I just need a rack tom and a floor tom. It will be very hard to find matching toms though. I'll have to scour eBay, and more than likely have to settle for toms that aren't as old as the kick and snare. I'm not sure if Slingerland ever made a 14 rack or 18 floor, but that's what I would like.

I currently play a 4 piece Gretsch Renown: 18x22, 8x10, 12x14, 5x14 and I'm happy with it. But, if I had to piece together my dream 4 piece, I'd have 16x20, 8x12, 14x14, and not sure about the snare size. Brand wise, there was a Gretsch USA Custom kit in a Cherry Lacquer on Ebay in those sizes that sold for $1200 or so yesterday that I would've loved to have. It had vintage spurs and tom holder as well. Sweet. That I think would've been my dream kit paired with a vintage Suprasonic snare, DW Flat Based Stands/9000 Bass Pedal and some Bosphorus Traditionals. Although a nice DW Jazz Kit in those sizes would be nice as well :)

I'd go with a configuration I haven't seen posted yet:
16X22
8X12
13X15
6.5X13 or 5.5X14 Snare
I like a 12" rack tom, but I wouldn't be satisfied with a 14" as my only floor tom and a 16" is too big a jump from the 12" for my tastes. (I actually use these configurations now, because I don't have a 15". That's how I know I don't prefer either the 14" or 16")
Brand would be DW most likely, although I would consider a Yamaha with birch toms and maple bass.

Only using this as reference and an example of what kind of color, wood hoops, and lug style I would want my drums. And they would be made by this company as well. :]
Bass drum (virgin) - 20x14
Snare - 14x6.5
Tom (mounted on a snare stand) - 12x8
Floor tom - 14x14
Oh, I can only dream for now haha
I was looking at those the other night. Those are very nice, and they based out of my state as well :)

You should totally get one!
...so we could have more of these drums in this forum haha.
What sizes would you get if you were to get a set?

Well, right now I'm not employed and I told my wife that my Gretsch Renown would be the last set I'd buy...but I said that quite a few times already so I'm sure she doesn't believe me anyway. So it would be a while before I'd be able to get one :) Two years I'd say atleast.
I would get
16x20 Bass
8x12 Tom (on snare stand unless they can get a banana rail holder)
14x14 Floor Tom
5x14 Snare
I do like my Renowns but I prefer a 20" bass, and a 14" floor with legs, both of which my kit doesn't have. But I got a good deal so I couldn't pass it up.
Care to trade for a set of Gretsch Renowns if I pay for shipping both ways? *lol*
...hmmmm.
Do you have a cool shirt that you could throw in?

I'm considering it, but I still wouldn't be able to afford the DW's without spending my own money and I can't do that right now.
Actually I started playing a 3 piece tonight and I really like it. The drums sound more full without a rack tom in front, and I can tune my snare any way I want without having to deal with sympathetic buzz reprocutions. I also think not having a rack tom is a luxury towards developing more creativity and a better feel, and for my style I don't see it 100% necessary. I may have to rethink what I want to get. It would just be a bass/floor/snare setup, but I would like atleast a 14" floor with legs (maybe larger) and a 20" bass, and 13" snare.

Wow. That's exactly what I'm using now.
Ludwig Classic Maple. Natural finish.
It's a dream.
All I use are hats and a ride.
No crash :)
It's my dream four piece.
Oh, I lied. I got a tambourine on it, too.

22" x 18" Virgin Kick
13" x 9" Tom
16" x 14" Floor Tom
14" x 7" Maple or Brass Snare
For what I do most often, and my style of playing, this would be a perfect all-around kit.

Hey all, great thread idea!
My dream kit actually is the following:
22x17 Yamaha Maple Custom Absolute
15x14 " " " "
12x8 Yamaha Birch Custom Absolute
And whatever snare. But really, chances of me affording that, especially considering Yamaha's prices lately...
So runner up involves a Mapex Saturn in Tobacco Burst, 22x18, 15x15 and 12x8.
Mmmmm *Drools*
