went to hollywood this weekend and picked up a cool souvenir. The stars are for my family -- the big, gold one for me (favorite color), blue one for my girl (her fav color) and the pink one for my daughter (her fav color). Took about an hour and i am pumped.

enjoy.

not too much pain in most places. Definitely you can handle it -- this was my first and we took no breaks -- just straight through. In fact, the color went on immediately after the black. The outer arm is far more tough than the tender under-arm that i placed mine on. Even still, i only winced where it got close to the joint on my wrist, my vein on my wrist and where the blue star started wrapping around the other side of my arm.

Easy peasy lemon squeezy, as my daughter says. I love it -- cant wait for my next one. Now that i know what to expect (the pain is FAR less than you think), i am excited!!! I am only going to ink my left arm. My right arm will remain untouched. I plan on all my future tats having meaning as well.... you will never regret putting something on your body that means something to you. At least i dont think. I waited 38 years for my first.... do it while you can do it. Live life with no regrets!

thanks for your kind words.

I started at 22.....I am 37 now...... My 2 daughters 5 and 6 have taken some of the urge away.....which is a good thing

thanks for your comments. Tats are a personal thing -- to comment on them like you would critique a drum solo is pointless -- they are not objective, but rather very subjective. I am not the type of guy to care what people think -- unless they are friends. I consider many of you friends of sorts (db, larlev, etc) -- and thus i was sharing something personal with friends, albeit in a public forum.

thanks for comments from my forum friends -- you know who you are.

Great tat Elvis.

I didn't get my first tat until I was 34.

I got a picture of my wife put on my right shoulder. Took about 3 hours to complete. It hurt, but not unbearably.

I also got the names of my daughters on my left shoulder. I left room for their portraits. I have been waiting for the "perfect" picture of them. I finally have one. Now, I just need to obtain the $500 to have that done.

Once you get one, you are always tempted to get more. I have almost gotten more on a whim, but promised my girls that I would get their portraits done first.

and a little pain I suffered about 12 years ago...I also have an ankh on my left arm, also dead center on my neck/back I have my sun sign......so, I was trying to incorporate, birth, death, eternal life...the full circle of life...

I had a lot of plans for 3/4 sleeves....with kids now just haven't been able to do it

Oh and that nice little 6" scar is the result from my nice little gallbladder almost bursting on me.....it was fun

Here's the tattoo that I'm considering, and a quick-and-dirty photoshop of its rough size and placement (not my back in the pic, obviously). It's a version of the chant "Om mani padme hum" in the Tibetan script, which cannot be literally translated but means something along the lines of "meditation, patience, discipline, wisdom, generosity, diligence."

Yes, the colors are traditional for that mantra, but it would look good in all black, too. Here's a pic of a "mani stone" with the colors but a slightly different version of the script.

mikei, that portrait of your wife is great.
Thank you Sir!

It looks so much better in person. I searched for 2 years to find an artist I trusted since I had no tatoos at the time.

People really freak out when I show them the tat with her standing next to me.

The weirdest part was after it was done, I took off the bandage and fell asleep in bed. When I woke up, there was an image of her in blood stained into the sheet. It was creepy!

I dig the one you want to get done on your back. It will probably hurt like hell since it will be on the spine!

My next one I want portraits of my children but it is hard to come across a good portrait tattooist.

if the artist is good, then it will heal well. Mine in the picture is healing nicely -- some peeling and flaking of the skin, but if you take care of it and the artist has propert technique, it should heal well without pain and (more importantly) without damage to the tattoo.

i have another tat that is a set of large stars -- the artist had a 'heavy hand' and scared part of my skin. Unfortunately it was slightly more painful than it needed to be (which it was not that painful) but more importantly it damaged the look of the tattoo slightly (discolored the blue). The good artist i found is going to touch it up for me, which should bring it back to its original state.

nice and ya that sucks about the heavy hand. i know the guy im getting it done from is very skilled, he has done many on my friends, and there is so much detail and shading. they said no peeling at all. so i guess it depends on the artist, the person and the place of the tattoo.

allrighty here we go.

First one I got about two years ago. I still have yet to go back to get it finished up. It needs to be colored in a bit more. Took approx. 2 hours straight. It was my first tattoo and the back of the leg where your knee bends....hurts, really....really bad!

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y10/BrokenGlassDesigns/230510439_l.jpg

My other one I just got about 2 weeks ago. It's a memorial tattoo for my good friend that just passed of brain cancer. He was the owner of the Drum Center of Lexington, so the the drumset in the center is part of the drumcenter logo. This one didn't hurt at all really, but my mind was more on loosing my friend at the time so I wasnt thinking about the pain. It took about an hour and after it heals i'm going to go get more added onto it as well.

Seeing as we're getting them out then heres mine, on my inner right forearm. Its a pair of Vic Firth 5A American Classics crossed over with flames through the center, took around an hour to an hour and 30 mins, and I wont lie, it hurt, not much but it did, but only at the start, but you soon get used to the sensation.

http://img507.imageshack.us/img507/2162/tattoo008ko1.jpg

Reason I had this one is because they're my first pair of sticks, so why not, im hoping to get another one soon maybe my second pair of sticks on the other arm.

Write off the bat I'm looking at that and thinking of something else. I don't really want chinese I want Korean.

Is there some kind of connection or interelation? I really want vintage Korean (I'm 100% Korean,).

I don't know, that's what I put in Google. I would ask someone like your parents or someone who would actually know. You don't want to find something, get it tattooed and find out that it means something embarassing or entirely different :)

looking good -- i like those. many would go with one or the other -- i like that you have both treble and bass clef. Very cool.

Ok, here's mine. Been growing over the last few months. It's only three tattoos in total. Actually, 3 and a 1/2..you can see the unfinished one. Haven't had them updated in a while due to some silly financial decisions as of late though....

got this back in october. I'm adding a heart, a music staff the words "rhythm within" and the music to a song my dad wrote for me when i was in the incubator as a baby (3.5 months premature)

i designed it and the artist just did my design exactly, it turned out as expected!
let me know what you think, i'll post the concept on paper later this week.

How'd the front of your bicep feel? i'm adding a large addition to mine that will cover basically my whole bicep and go onto the inside of my arm, which i've hurt sucks pain wise.

It's alright, I've had more done now though. The underside of the arm is pretty tender, but alltogether not too bad after the first few minutes.

sounds good. the majority of mine will be on my bicep i guess the centre/top of it. I maybe have 30 mins that will be directly on the inside.

Hey everyone.

Just stopping in to show you the newest addition to my body. Tell me what you think.

The way I see it is they are easy to conceal, they are tasteful, no text, and the only way I'm going to willing stop drumming is if I lose both of my arms...which would get rid of the tattoos anyways...so I guess im covered.

No offence but I'm not a huge fan, something classy would have been nice, to me it seems like you said "Hey I play drums put some big ass full sized sticks on me!" without any thought behind it. But who am I to tell you what to do, your the one that has to live with it.

i appreciate the passion but it's not something i would want for my own tattoo. but then again, as a few people have already said my opinion doesn't mean jack. all in all i think it's awesome that you want to represent your art permanently on your body, i just might have done it slightly differently.

I like it actually. I'd probably get it with, like, the Vic Firth emblem on it myself because Vic Firth is the most amazing drumstick on this earth in my opinion and I'm a die hard vic fan.

In all honesty at the end of the day they are your tattoo's and if you like them then heck that's all that matters.

It just so happens that I love them and think that they look great!

Its cool to see that as its an idea I've toyed with but not gone ahead with.

My prefered place to have sticks tattoed would be on my forearms but that potentially causes problems at work and stuff. Maybe lower legs would be better.

I've thought about making the design a bit more elaborate, like a bunch of sticks twisted around each other a bit or a bunch made to look like the trunk of a tree somehow with small twigs and moss and imperfections and stuff like that. Hopefully those arent too pretentious.

This tattoo has been a vision of mine for the past 11 years. I have always wanted to capture my love for drumming and music in the form of a tattoo. For years I went back and forth with the idea of using my own hands and or drums in the portrait. Then after reading Neil Pearts wife Carrie Nuttall's portrait book that captures Neil in many beautiful photographs I found the perfect picture. I have a quote that I created and have used on the name of one of my personal drumming albums: "Rhythm In The Hands Of Few". I thought that it would also be a perfect description for this portrait tattoo which includes Neil Pearts hands. I would like to thank Neil Peart for all the years of inspiration he has given to me. Someday, Neil, if you are ever near my Howland, Ohio home, we will have to take a motorcycle ride together! I would also like to thank Carrie Nuttall for the great portrait art she has created. Thanks for looking.

I have got myself several eagles tattooed on my arms and forearms, I have them made in Venezuela, Scotland and USA.

I was actually going to start a thread to see who had what for ink, glad I did a search first.

added to my arm, let me know what you think, it says Rhythm WIthin. I was born 3.5 months premature and had open heart surgery... the song is meant to be something my dad played for me on a tape player (that he recorded) when i was in the hospital.
hope you like it, all in all about 8 hours and i just got it reoutlined so ad another 2.

I only have two tattoo's so far but i am getting more in my future. The ace of spades one is located on my left calf and the treble clef/bass clef is located on my inner right fore arm. The treble/ bass clef is obviously representing my love for music and my appreciation for the art and the talent and soul that goes into every piece of music i play as well as others music. It will be soon turning into a sleve. And the ace of spades represents a few things. One is my family, it represents my family because we love playing cards together and always have an amazing time doing it. It also is ironic considering the ace of spades is the death card and i have something that represents death on my body. It also represents my love of the darker and more evil things in life. In my future i am getting a drumset on my back, plus a tattoo on my foot that represents my sister.

I to am very covered I've been collecting tattoos since I was just 16. This one here is one of my favorites. I got this after serving as a Platoon sergeant during the surge in Iraq. It really means a lot to me every time I look at it. No it's not bruised that's the way it looks & the dog tags read... "Never forget Fallen Soldiers"

I have two. The fairy was the first one on my right shoulder. "Croire" is French for 'to believe'.

The second is on my left leg and was inspired by the Triumph song "Magic Power".
