Who uses coated powerstroke 3 or similar heads on toms? How do they sound? I'm waiting for evans EC1 to appear. EC1 is 14 mil and EC2 is 2x7 mil; what's the difference in sound??
I ask because coated ambs are too open for me and coated emps too dull. It's either the ply thickness or the coating which kills it for me.
Since most annoying ring comes from the hoops, by logic, it would be more help to muffle the edges than the center or the entire head. Finally, does a 1 ply with external O ring muffle as much as /more than /less than a PS3 ?
can't help you with PS3s, but you seem a little confused on evans heads. there's no such thing as an EC1, or a 14 mil thick one ply head

THE EVANS EDGE CONTROL ONE PLY DRUMHEAD: THE EC REVOLUTION CONTINUES
FARMINGDALE, NY, Jan. 17, 2007 -When Evans introduced the EC2 in 2005, the double-ply head featuring the ingenious EC ring that selectively controls overtones, everybody knew it was an idea whose time had come. The overwhelming acceptance of the EC2 was a signal that drummers sought a head that addressed overtones in a contemporary fashion. That is, curb errant harmonics, enhance lower-mid frequencies, while promoting a pleasant, ambient sustain. Perhaps Evans Product Manager Mike Robinson put it best: The EC2 is not simply damped; its treated around the edges to fine-tune overtones and response.
With the introduction of the EC1, Evans now offers good news for single-ply aficionados. The EC1 was developed in collaboration with designer Bob Gatzen. Like its two-ply sister, the EC1 does not haphazardly mute the circumference, nor does it interfere with the bearing edge of the drum. Rather, it offers discriminating edge treatment that controls upper frequencies while promoting solid attack and a rich, dense low end component.
It also happens to be an extremely rugged single-ply head. For the EC1, Evans and Gatzen beta tested extensively until the optimum film thickness was achieved. At 14 mil, the EC1 is thicker than industry standard single-ply heads. The weightier film provides a solid, sturdy feel and extra durability. The transition from stick attack to ample sustain is lightning quick, making this head ideal for fast rhythmic patterns around the toms. For those whove longed for a super-durable one-ply head that delivers the lush, lower-mid frequencies inherent in our EC2, the EC1 is tailor made.
Weve heightened durability in a single-ply head without making it feel stiff or sound choked, adds Mike Robinson. With the EC1, the drummer gets all the attractive attributes of standard single-ply heads, while enjoying increased definition and a longer head life. This is a head for live or studio in all genres.
Evans EC-1 heads are offered in sizes 6 through 18 in clear or coating- and will be available in the first quarter of 2007.
well, i stand corrected. pretty cool. 14 mil still does seem pretty thick though, wonder what that's like

I ahve been experimenting with the clear PS3 heads on toms and here is what I can tell you:
It is a waste on smaller (10") toms as you need more sound out of the smaller toms and the PS 3 tends to make 10" toms sound "pecky". On a 12" tom it is a viable option as you will still get some resonance and on bigger drums, they can sound fantasitc!
Now, another factor is whether you are being close miked and how good the sound engineer is. I have been fortunate enough to work with some great engineers with pro equipment and attitudes! I have also had to work with guys to whom the word "hack" would be a compliment! The hack HAS to have everything done the way it was done in 1973, or he gets feedback!

I'll second that 'cause the smallest tom I had was a 12". Now I'm running 15, 16, 18. All sound great with clear P3 batter.

Mad Jazz.
I've been using the EC2 clear heads for a couple of years now with great success. Nice depth due to the 2 ply and the ring eliminated, not muffled, just enough.
I had a chance to play the new EC1 a few weeks ago. The had a "Thinner" sound due to the single ply.
However they a feel similar to the 2 ply due to the 14 mil single ply.
The snare batter (EC1Coated) head feels more like a 2 ply. Granted these heads were mounted to a Mapex Saturn kit at the store, not my own kit.
I would love to see Evans apply the EC ring to the underside of a G1 Coated for a snare batter head.
A 1 ply Evans G1 Coated, Remo Ambassodor with O Ring muffles more than an Evans Genera or Remo Powerstroke. Although it seems to me that the Genera/ Powerstroke had a deeper tone. This may be due to the ring that sits between the bearing edge and the batter head. The single ply with O ring to me seems more crisp.

Those must be some FAT sounding toms! Is that Popeye's calling - they need some of that fat in their deep fryer!

I am guessing you favor these over Pinstripes? I know it is a 1 ply versus 2 ply comparison. If you do, please explain why.

When I played Vistalites (for 25 years) I used clear Pins batter almost exclusive. Those were some very live drums and needed some...taming. My current 6 ply Ludwig maples sing a different tune. To me, the Pins muffle the drums too much. I get really nice balance with a clear P3 batter and clear Ambassador reso. My other 2 favorite combo's (always with the Amb's reso.) are clear Ambassador batter or clear Controlled Sound batter. The 6 ply shell, I think, strikes a nice balance between a modern shell and the "vintage" 3 ply. And indeed, my toms are all blue/olive badged and my kick is Monroe, but the older 6 ply, not the newer 10 ply shell. By the way, they're not fat, they're Big Boned!

CS will not control ring from hoops.

A coated CS is right between those heads. Not as open as a Ambo and not as dull as a Emp.

well, if coated emperors are too dull, pinstripes are exactly what he doesn't want
