I been searching forever to find the best stick for my hands. When I am pleased with a stick I still have in mind that there might be a better stick out there . But there is always a new model out so how did you end with your chosen pair?

After 2 and a half years of playing intolerable sticks, I FINALLY stumbled upon the Stewart Copeland Signature sticks from Vater. Amazing sticks with a great feel and as durable as metal.

It took me about 2 years. I played a standard 5A but I was messing around with sticks at my local drum shop and I was very pleased with Mike Portnoy Pro-Mark sticks so I bought a pair to try them out on a kit and they worked very well too.
If you haven't tried every stick on the market, how do you know what stick is your favorite?
Basically, you've found a stick you like better than the last stick.

That's just it. You never know I guess, and few people have the time or the money to try every stick on the marked so do we ever stop searching?

About two years. After lots of cheap noname sticks and a very disappointing pair by Zildjian (Anti-vibes), I bought a Vic Firth American Sound (round tip) 5a pair. And never needed anything else ever since.

Yeah, I don't think I'll ever find the perfect stick, because there are so many models/companies out there. Recently I've been using the Danny Carey Sig's most of the time, but I still like my Ahead's.

I USED 5A FOR YEARS . THEN SOMEONE GAVE ME A VATER STEWART COPELAND MODEL. LOVED IT ,BUT WAS A HAIR TOO THIN. AFTER RESEARCHING SIZES : LENGTH vs WIDTH I CAME UP WITH THE VATER FUSION. PERFECT STICK FOR MY PLAYING STYLE.LENGTH AND WIDTH PLAY A BIG ROLE IN HOW THE STICK FEELS IN MY HAND AND ON THE DRUM

First year or two i just used a random pair of sticks that were light because i was small at age 7. I soon found the Pro Mark 747 Rock sticks with nylon tips. Absolutley amazing and versitle sticks, considering they are meant for rock.

I still havnt found the right stick and ive been playing for awhile. Sometimes i get usewd to a stick and then i want more reach. I get more reach then i get more witdth.. i get more width and .. well you get the point. Plus i play so many different styles of music. I cant wait to get big so i can have my own custom sticks.

I used Regal Tip for 2 years and then wanted to try something different. I picked up a pair of Pro Mark 5B American hickory and haven't played on anything else since then except for the Neil Peart sticks that are Japan Oak from Pro Mark.

A couple years at the most. I started to play Pro Mark 747s and at the time didn't know Peart had played them forever. Years later I found his sig stick made out of oak and never went back. I sometimes/rarely use thicker sticks and if I do I use 'Naturals'.

For a long time, I never really had a favorite stick. Then when I got seriouss again, I tried several different brands and models. I found that the Promark 747, 808 and the like were heavier for my playing style as were the 3A models from Vic Firth and Zildjian (I'm remembering the process now). I also tried the 5A but found it too heavy. I was working with the Vic Firth 7As but felt I wanted a 16" stick as I wanted more reach and that is how I ended up with the Vic Firth 8D jazz as my favorite stick which is what I am using 16 years later.

That is just what i am doing also.. I play with VF 5BX right now, but the tips don't produce the cymbal sound I want and they are a bit thick. So I want a different tip and a thinner stick. So I am thinking og Vater Fusion right now.

Canīt say that I have. At the moment I really enjoy the promark Benny Greb signature model. Nice balance, itīs based on a 5B. Feels powerful, but it is actually a very light stick.

I've wanted to try them. I usually use Vater Fusion wood tips ...love those, but the last 2 pair I bought kind of disinegrated....but I'm going to chauk that up to the fact that I had my snare up too high and I was wacking the rim!!! DUH!!!! anyhow....
Stew's stick is like the fusion, but a tad smaller than the 5A...I may have my guy at GC order me a pair!!

I think this evolves with our playing over time. I have "found" my favorite stick many times. I guess right now I am very happy with my Pro Mark 5A's and 5B's. I keep many sticks around for different playing like 7A's, Gadd's, Weckl's and what not but I mainly use the PM's.

Good question and some interesting answers...seems to be a Vator favor round here!
For me it came down to finish...my skin-oil type matches the finish of Regal Tips perfectly. And their Jazz stick and now the BG are the longest sticks available for the gauge.

i never really tried to find a "favorite" until i started playing jazz in high school, that's when i realized that the "$2 a pair" sticks out of the pail on the floor of the music store might not be the best sticks to have in the bag.
After that, it took me probably 3-4 years to convince myself that I shouldn't immediately overlook sticks with colored finishes, which led me to grabbing a set of weckl's signatures. I've been playing them for like 7 years now, but I think my next band might require something a little beefier near the tip... so i have to start all over again.

Vic Firth 5A/55A/AH5A
The 5A as my main stick, the 55A for heavier songs, and the AH5A for either fast or light songs.

6 years and counting....
I started on 5As. Went to 5Bs for durability. Back to 5As (vic firth). Changed to Vater 3A Fatback nylons, thought i'd found my stick, bought a brick of sticks. a year later changed to vater new orleans, seriously liking these..... then back to Vater 5A, better balance. now vater 5A nudes.
Also random pairs in between each major stint on a stick. Really happy with 5A nudes though.
