I'm looking for a small & deep 2nd snare, for a latin timbale effect (when the snares are thrown off).
How's the yamaha steel snares in 10-12" ?

I've tried them out and they sound great both with snares on and off.

mhhh, how about a Musashi Oak 13x6.5"?? It would be deep but I don`t know whether the diameter is small enough to get the effect you want.
What is your opinion?

Well honestly you can't really go wrong with Yamaha, but I would suggest looking at the other metals available. Steel is pretty simple in tone, but the Yamaha Brass and Copper shells are dynamic and warm. The choices for the Brass and Copper are: Brass 14x4 or 13x4. Copper: 14x4. Both metals are more dynamic than Steel, but it's your choice in the end, so I would reccomend trying them bofre you buy.

Yamaha 10 and 12" snares only come in steel. My other choice would be a pearl fircracker but I prefer to stick to yamaha. What are other good aux snare in that size range?

also the one i will buy, but i'm waiting on my custom aluminium one being finished first. that's an expensive snare and i doubt i'll have much cash left after i've paid the last payment on it.

Well if the 12x6 Musashi is anything like as good as my 13x6.5 Musashi I say go for it. Right now.

I just rented the 12x6 musashi snare for my recording session for my bands' demo. The guy at the store says to me "so you're looking for a secondary snare eh?" "No man, this is going to be my main snare, i'm recording tomorrow." ".......you have guts man". I don't see the problem. The snare cuts like hell. If all goes well with the recording, than it's mine for sure and i'll be joining the Musashi family.
