hey what it is guys (and gals) . . . new member to the forum so howdy <o)


any hiphop drummers out there - and if so what are you using for hihats?

A buddy is using the Paiste 10" signature hihats, and although they are plenty sharp, and pretty brisk they are a but too high pitched for me. I am considering the Paiste Noise Works 12" fizzle hat:

any other recommendations for a hiphop - funk type situation.

My current hats are 14" Zildjian ZBT's and they're a bit chunky and heavy for my tastes. . . but plenty versatile for more rock orientations.


ALSO - how the hell can I buy these things without having to special order? Seems like these niche hihats are all special order.

If I do have to special order, any recommendations on who I should special order from? West Coast Drums maybe?

Groove hats would really go along in those catagories, or maybe the AA fusions, they are great for funk.

I use 14" 2002 soundedge hats for rock - metal and then use my 14" signature soundedge hats for funk... i would suggest try the 13" signature soundedge hats...they are very bright ,tight and crisp...

Hey ether_joe, what kinda hip hop are you playing?

Is it dark and aggressive like Cypress Hill or mellow and jazzy like the Roots of yesteryear?

I love to play lots of hip-hop and I use Meinl Custom Shop 13" Hi-hats (one of a kind so not much help if you are trying to find them!)

I think what kind of hip hop you are playing will depend on what type of hihats you will be looking at.
Something upbeat and funk oriented is probably going to mean you go for a bright hi hat sound where as if you are going down a jazzier route to the hip hop extravaganza you will be after something darker.

hey thanks guys for the feedback. I just picked up some Sabian AA fusions used. Hopefully I'll get 'em for the weekend. . .

Not exactly what I'm looking for, but I think they'll be a nice upgrade from my crappy ZBT's.

not sure yet what kinda hiphop. . . I am thinking more along the Roots line though. I think if it was to be more Cypress like I'd go for a more rock sound. I wonder what Brad Wilk uses. . .

I am a hip hop drummer, i am am also in a punk band the hats that i use for hiphop is 13" Paiste 2002 sound edge, also 12" meinl Safari hats.

I find the paiste perfect for the live recordings. but i have been known to use real kick, real snare, and electronic hats. i also have a tin can shaker i like to use instead of hats.

If youve got the money, some HHX Groove hats will be nice.

I think that the 13" K/Z Hats would be perfect for your needs. Clean, and washy at the smae time, lower pitched but very controllable.

Then 13" K Mastersounds for a more washy hat. I play 14" and they are great. Good luck w. your choice.

Almost any good hi-hat will do the trick, since you can control their sound with your touch and the amount of pedal pressure. Loose pressure + shaft of the stick + the edge of the cymbal = BIG and loose sound. Tight pressure + tip of the stick + bow of the cymbal = SMALL and tight sound. So, just get a pair of good sounding hihats (i.e. ones that don't go "klunk") and make them work.

Mine are excellent for that type of stuff.

They are Istanbul Mehmet 13" with flot bottom with 4 holes. very crisp, responsive and lot of trashiness and dark complex sound within the brightness of being 13".

I use 13" K/Z hats and play a lot of hip hop, very very controllable, clean and can be very agressive semi open, I love um.
