As most of you know I am building my own kit....here's my dilema
I have the 10x8 built......what are your thoughts if I went with 10x8, 12x10 for the rack toms..I know this is against the norm, but I think in the long run I will just have a 1 up 2 down setup anyway....
The kit sizes are going to be.....10x8, 12x10, 14x14, 16x16, 20x22(gonna give this size a try...should be a cannon)

How about 10x8, 12x10, 14x12, 16x14, and 22x20?

I never really liked the floor toms sized that way.....I like the bottom end I get out of the square sized floors....
I have a 22x20 now...so I figured I would go with a 20" kick, I'll be able to lower my toms down a bit, with less angle...and it looks good...

the 16x14 is easier to tune and sounds better(to my ears anyway), I would go 12x9 just cuz it would be easier to move around, also they are supposed to sound more focused, just my $.02 though its your kit

I like the diameters- my personal preference is to a 10x8 , 12x10 , 14x12, 16x14 - so some of each from the previous posts. Either way, theres nothing wrong with getting away from a standard rock or fusion kit, especially since now so many kits are going to 10,12,14,16 diameters. Major props for building your own kit too.

to me, 20/22 bass sounds... tempting.
isn't it great to be out of ordinary?

Haven't you always liked the sound of your 10' tom the most somehow? I have and so has my drum teacher, so he just went with two 10' toms (with different depth though for a bigger sound difference). So when you want to go unconventional, instead of the 12' get a 10x6 or something like that. Of course that would move everything up so if you're going for a deep sound, it might not be your thing.

Power toms. Right on. With square floor tom sizes, and you already mentioning going to the 1 up, 2 down configuration, I'd probably be partial to the 12, 14, 16 combo over the 10, 14, 16. Deeper was all the rage in the 80's. Worked then, should work now.

Thats different. Ive always favored my 10" because its mobile and my 12 is sorta dead sounding. Im no custum drum builder though =(
