So, say you're playing a gig, and you aren't sure what exactly it is. It could be anywhere from Moderate Rock to "Wedding Reception Jazz".
What cymbals do you bring? That is, what are your cymbals that you take with you for everything?
For example, my list goes like this:
22" K Ride
20" Saluda Hybrid X Dark Jazz Ride (also can be used as crash if necessary)
17" K Custom Special Dry Crash
14" A Custom Fast Crash
13" Paiste Dimensions Light hats (Bottom on top for heavier gigs)
So my parameters are:
Any 2 Rides
Any 2 Crashes
Any 1 Hi-hat.
If you don't have said cymbals, feel free to dream or choose others. I've just chosen mine within the last few days, realizing how much I use them for a variety of gigs.

17" Medium Thin Crash
20" Medium Ride with Rivets (changed out to a 21" Rock Ride for those rock gigs
18" Thin Crash
8" Splash
On a five piece kit, includes the above and
6" Splash
8" Splash
17" K China Boy

I would choose 1 Ride, 1 Crash and a Hi-Hat.
- 20" vintage Avedis Zildjian Ride (from my drum teacher, most versatile)
- 18" Paiste Full Crash (also from my teacher, good for ride use as well)
- 14" Sabian HHX Evolution Hi-Hats
abnd maybe my 12" Sabian HHX Evolution splash.
would be my set-up, my most versatile...

i'd also choose the one of each set up:
15" giant beat hats (i'd use 2002 crunch hat as a bottom for louder gigs)
24" giant beat ride (great for jazz according to some over at the cymbalholics forum)
19" 2002 crash

13" Dark Crisp Hihats
20" Sound Creation Dark Ride
17" 2002 Crash

I would go with:
14" Avedis New Beats
16" A Custom Crash
20" K Ride

I would take ready to set up a ride, crash, and hats, but have the rest of what I owned in the car for a speedy change just in case..two more stands with cymbals doesnt take much room. I have risers for my splashes and they go on quickly.

14'' 2002 heavy hats, it is actualy very versatile
18'' HHXtreme crash
20'' 2002 Medium, it is an exelent crash, but also a very good ride, with a nice bell , it is my most versatile cymbal.
( If I could bring three, I usually just use the two 2002's, I would also bring my 17'' AA Thin
I have a lot of other cymbals too, but those are not as versatile.

I would just take all the cymbals i have. They are all pretty versitle.
-16 inch A thin crash
-16 inch HHX evolution crash
-10 inch pst spalsh (not the best but i get by)
(i would replace my hi hats cuz i have b8's.)
-14 inch quickbeats or 14 Inch K hats
-22 inch A medium ride.
The 2 crashes and ride are unbelivably nice.

14" Bosphorus Traditional Reg/Dark Hats
18" Bosphorus Masters Crash
20" Bosphorus Stanton Moore Trash Crash
20" Bosphorus Traditional Thin Ride
22" Bosphorus Jeff Hamilton Ride (2 rivets)
The hats are pretty versatile, and could be used for most styles.
The Masters Crash is good as a workhorse crash for rock, or an all-around crash for pop songs or ballads.
The Trash Crash works as a nice, gongy crash for jazz, but has the potential to also sound good as a really nasty secondary crash for rock.
The Trad thin ride is a very good all-around ride, and again.. very versatile.
The Jeff Hamilton ride is for a main ride when playing jazz (the 20" ride becomes a left-side ride/crash)
well i would take what i always take
14'' saluda mist-x ripple bottom
22'' dream contact ride
18'' paiste prototype (dimensions smashed into the 2002 alloy)
18'' sabian xs20 (soon to replace with saluda something maybe earthworks) but for the xs20 is a LOT darker then the paiste so its like night and day they work really well together

14" A. Zildjian New Beat or 14" Paiste Alpha Hi Hats
21" Paiste Prototype Dimensions/2002 Ride
20" Paiste Alpha Flat Ride
16" Paiste 2002 Crash
18" Paiste 2002 Heavy Crash
22" Paiste Accent Gong
And that pretty much does it,I don't need alot to keep me happy, although I do carry around afew more in the cymbal bag. I go nowhere without at least one gong: they come in handier than you would think and they're a great "girl magnet...."

14" K Zildjian hats
22" Dream Bliss crash/ride ( or maybe 22" K Custom flat ride in a quiet setting)
18" Sabian HHX Studio Crash
16" K Zildjian Custom Dark Crash
I leave the Chinas, splashes & extra crashes out of the basic setup. Saves weight & time.

Zildjian oriental 22in ride
Dream 22 in ride
Zildjian K custom Hats
I really love dual ride setups. I'd probably throw a dark splash in too for good measure. I played a very similar setup at a lesson recently. I really enjoy it.
