Yamaha Recording Series 80's vs 2000's

Looking at picking up a yamaha recording series kit made in 2001. I like the recording series of the 80's. Is their much differences in the newer recording series drums compared to the 80's production?

The shells are identical. The only difference that I can see is the YESS tom mount, which is an improvement. That's one good thing about the RC line.

There are some cosmetic differences in the 900 series hardware but functionality is the same. I can't speak for the pedals though.

Thanks X22, the yess mounts was the only thing I was thinking was different also. But you never know with several years down the road of production how things can change. I've seen that in other drum manufacturers.

As X22 said, there is basically no difference. Just the mounts and perhaps the finishes. Nothing that ultimately and fundamentally changes the sound.

The only constant in finishes between the early stuff and now is the black finish. The finishes of the 80s are gone (white, red, natural, green). The cherry finish was introduced to the public (pros could get cherry prior) in the early 90s.

If you look at a Yamaha catalog from 1990 and look at Yamaha's web site, the content regarding the RC drum construction is nearly the same.

I would LOVE to get an RC kit now in White finish....

oh well... Vintage Finish Maple Custom will have to suffice... :-)

I've been playing a late 80's set of Yamaha Power Recordings in Cherry wood since I bought them in the 80's. Great kit and the finish and quality are fantastic. In all the years I've toured, the kit has only 3 blemishs from road work. In comparison to the newer versions of the drums, the only thing is that the finishes don't look as deep. Difference in the clearcoats might be the reason but I'm not sure. I also prefer the Non - Yess system drums. :-)

If I were you, I would look for a set of these on Ebay! Possibly a late 80s or early 90s kit. I almost bought the set Dave Weckl played on at a clinic and then blew it for some Tama Granstar IIs.

I don't believe that there is much difference in what is made now and what was made before although I did see the post about the finish not being as deep!

Skitch, I was bidding on a yamaha rc on ebay. The auction just closed & I did not win the auction. But I will keep my eyes & ears open. The kit went for a good price but went pass the amount in my drum fund account.
