hey guys i'm having some tuning problems for some reason. i have a 10 12 14 stage custom standard and i'm having trouble tuning the 10 tom. i have the 12 and 14 easily tuned but when i tune the 10 it either has a high pitched bend and ring that sounds horrible and if i lower the bottom it sounds dead and if i tighten the top it has a timbale kinda sound. any ideas? i haven't had trouble tuning in a long time so i don't know whats going on all of a sudden.

What heads are you running on your kit?

- Make sure the drum's shell hasn't gone out of round and that the bearing edges are intact.
- Get a pair of new heads, if yours aren't already. Tap test them to hear if they resonate well by themselves. If not, you've got a defective head.
- Tune both heads to their lowest resonant note. Then tune them into the same pitch. Continue by tweaking the sound and feel to your own preference, and finally, tune it up to fit the rest of the kit.

i'm pretty sure its round since i trust yamaha's air seal but i'll check anyway and the heads are fairly new so i'm thinking its probably the room(stone basement) that could be leading the weird resonance

Have you replaced the stock resos? That could be a big root of your tuning problem. Also, have you tried tightening the bottom head?

no they're not stock heads. and i have tried tightening the bottom head, thats where i have it now but when i listen from the front it sounds dead with no resonance at all. but if i tighten the top i lose the round sound i like and it sounds like a timbale.

Have you tried getting it to the "timbale" stage and then lowering the bottom head ever so slight a bit at a time and see if it brings back the round sound without it being dead? It may be that this particular drum doesn't have a very wide tuning range.
