occassionally when i get a rimshot on the snare (or an accent) with traditional grip, ill get a sharp pain in my wrist, not terrible though. will this amount to a serious problem later on?

Thanks

Any pain can amount to damage. Talk to a doctor.

I somtimes get this pain you are talking about. That is why i almost only play traditional when im playing jazz because usually there is much less of a need for them.

But read my signature.

how do you set up your snare? is there a tilt to the setup at all? this may help to alleviate the pain. if you play it flat, then maybe look to stewart copeland as an example. he would open his hand to relax the grip when he hit the snare ( w/ a rim shot) which allowed his hand to follow thru w/ the motion....perhaps that will take some sting out of it.

i have just recently switched to match from mostly trad grip to help w/ this issue because its just easier to have the setup i want and play matched.

also, going to the doctor is not a bad idea.....he could give you some insight as to whats causing the pain.

best of luck

What!? We've all waited for Sting to get back into it with Copeland and you want to get rid of him already! Sheesh. ;)

I use mostly trad now and in every lesson I had and studied, they tell to workout the wrist movement palm up to palm down and even stretch it palm up counter clockwise to its limit. I do that often and I have notice less pain or "inconfort zone" while playing and also notice my accent are firmer and stronger.

Hypothetically, trad grip shouldn't cause any pain. It's been used for decades by some of the world's greatest drum set players and rudimental snare drummers. Players like Virgil Donati, Thomas Lang and Stewart Copeland smack the heck out of their snare with it and have been doing so for years without serious medical problems.

If there's pain, it's likely due to two factors: 1) improper technique and 2) not adequately warming up.

Next to seeing a doctor, I might seek out a good instructor... in my mind, there has to be technique issues if you're experiencing pain. Switching to matched might no alleviate the problem either...

As for myself I wouldn't call it pain but more inconfort because the wrist movement use in trad grip is somewhat inconventional.
