Not that I actually need it, mind you, but sometimes there's a deal just too good to refuse.
A local drummer friend of mine has offered me just such a deal on a kit that he's rebuilding. It's an early-80's vintage Rogers XP-8, 4-piece in Mist Blue ... and from my research, they sound like well-loved drums. I'm headed over tonight to give 'em a look/listen.
While there are no gigs in the foreseeable future, I am talking with several bands who might be in the market for a drummer, so I decided to throw some good mojo in the mix and have a tremendous gig kit at the ready.

What scares me is the cost of the accessories I'm gonna need! I mean, the red snare and red throne are just gonna clash something awful ... and do I really want to put a vintage kit on a rack?

Looks nice. Good luck with them :)

..oh and putting any drums on a rack if it's smaller than a 7 piece is a no-no in my book anyway :)

Oh a Rogers XP-8! 8-ply maple shells from Keller, one of the first (if not the first) kit to offer slightly thicker all-maple shells. If they're in good condition, those are some absolutely killer drums and I would instantly take the offer, provided they're in good condition. Really nice Glynes, I hope you land them.

Those look great. Good luck with the negotiations. And where have you been hiding. No posts in forever.

Went to visit the drums tonight, and they're fabulous!! The picture doesn't do the color justice ... they're beautiful, and sound oh-so-good ... they sure do project!
I left a deposit, he's swapping out a rim on the kick and finishing off a couple of other cosmetic things, and I'll pick up a week from Sat.
Guess it's time to haul the junk out of the basement to the Goodwill, and make a spot to set up.

As to where I've been ... well, around, but just not much to say. Drumming hasn't been a focus while trying to recompress after a terrific vacation at the beach ... the new kit has fixed that.

Those are nice. I had a huge Rogers set in blue mist, beautiful drums. The tom mounts are among the sturdiest ever built & the drums sound great. Don't let anyone talk you into mounting the toms on those bouncy bouncy rims mounts, it'd be an insult to the drums.

I will be on the prowl now for more bits and pieces in Mist Blue.
Hmmmm ... I wonder if they ever made Octobans....?

No. What pieces would you be looking for?

Great set of drums. Your rack clamps might accept the Rogers tom holder pipe diameter and if that's the case, why not rack the toms? With my 15" Ludwig rack tom, to make it compatible with my Pearl clamps I downsized the Ludwig 1" modular tube to 7/8". Simple enough and required no modification to the drum itself. Cats down the hall where I rehearse at have a Big R kit in 24, 13, 16. Slammin' drums. Congrats.

Getting really anxious to get these babies home!
I'll be looking for any other sizes in the same finish ... and I figure that the snare that originally came with the kit has to be out there somewhere! 8-) Meanwhile, I have joined eBay (Please Lord, stop me before I bid again!!) ... and may have some exciting news tomorrow if I get real lucky!

As for the rack ... well, I ran across a picture of a vintage kit on a rack and it just looked so wrong! And the toms sit so nicely on the bass that I don't really want to change that. I've found some flat-base stands that I'm told are the right look for this era of drums, so we'll see how they work out. I'll admit that I haven't missed at all having to battle with all those darned feet getting in each other's way!

Nick has got his rack split, http://www.drummerworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23688 which may be a good solution/alternative for you as well. Preserves the "old school" look front and center, then gets all your cymbals nice and tidy. Gibraltar and DW both make cool flat base cymbal stands, but even with flat base, the more cymbals you run, the harder it gets.

Nice drums! I remember when these first came out and the catalog they were in! Rogers drums were great drums. too bad the company was owned by CBS, who didn't understand the business!

Looks like a great aquisition! The finish looks really hi-tech! Think of some clear Octabans!

Glynes,

Is your current snare drum have a wrap finish?
Maybe you could find some wrap that is the same or a similar colour as the Rogers kit and simply re-wrap the snare to match.
I understand that once all the hardware's off, a putty knife and a hair dryer are about all that's needed to remove a wrap finish (assuming your snare drum has one).

Otherwise, the Rogers look great.
XP-8 shells = one of the first mass produced 100% Maple shelled drum lines.

BTW, thank you for not racking the kit. It's more trouble than its worth.
Also, flat base stands are a little "pre" your kit.
Flat base was "in" in the 60's. XP-8 dates from late 70's / early 80's.
If I were you, and were to gig this kit, I'd just get some Gibraltar's that were meaty enough to handle your cymbal arrangement.

...or you could just use the stands you already have?

Good Luck!

Four more days till my sweet little kit comes home!! Can't wait!!

And in the meantime, some more tremendous news!! While on EBay, scoping out the possibility of a Rogers snare, I ran across something I never thought I'd have ... I started a real bidding war, then sat back, and at literally the last second, still not believing I'd get it, I won! It was a display model from a music store that had gone out of business ... got it for considerably less than retail/new, and just a touch more than used.

So, let me introduce my Kenny Aronoff Signature Trackmaster snare!! Kenny is on notice that the next time he comes to town, he's to play something on it, sign the inside, and teach me to tune it to sound like him.

...and thus we witness a new dawn breaking on yet, another fledgling gearhead...

;-)

Congrats on your new purchases.
That Trackmaster is beautiful.

Is that the 14x5 or the 15x4 version?
