coated heads?

i've tried all kinds of the non-coated heads and now i'm trying some coated, but i'm not sure which ones i want to buy...anybody got any suggestions for a good type of coated heads?

Well popular around here are usually Evans G2 or Remo Ambassador.

I own Remo Emperor coated on my set, they're workin fine and dandy for me.

What kind of set do you own?

I have coated Evans G2 on all my toms and they sound great...even on snares they sound great and the rebound is excellent. Unlike Remo, Evans coating doesn't wear off as fast. If you want open sound, get the 1 ply Evans G1...if you want a more focused sound, get the 2 ply Evans G2.

Yea a week ago i was shopping for snare heads and the guy told me that Evans rolls on the coating compared to the spray that Remo does...I definitally like the rolled on coating. I think im going evans from now on.

Try coated Aquarian Super 2s. These are two ply heads that are a little thinner than G2s or Emperors. I have had these on my Tama Starclassic for a couple of months now. They sound better than any two ply head I have tried...unfortunately for my wallet I have tried them all. I love them on my snare drum as well.

I tried Aquarian Studio X (coated) I NEVER used coated heads in almost 30 years of playing. I have had them on for a week and I like their sound BUT the coating is flaking off!! I will stick to clear heads. I also don't care for the white marks all over my cymbals either.

I played a benefit this past weekend with a backline drumset. They were DWs and the bass drum had an Aquarian superkick head. It sounded and felt terrible! I don't understand what all the hype is about these heads!

As said before, I would suggest the Remo Coated Ambassodors or the Evans G2 Coated. I have also heard great things about the Coated EC2. Im thinking about Clear EC2's as my next set of heads.

I played a benefit this past weekend with a backline drumset. They were DWs and the bass drum had an Aquarian superkick head. It sounded and felt terrible! I don't understand what all the hype is about these heads!

Maybe it was too loose? I find that they are better medium tight instead of loose. When they are loose, they feel and sound very sloppy IMO. I use the super kick 1 (single ply) The 2ply version is just too damn heavy. To me, it doesn't feel or sound right at any tension. Maybe that was what was on the set you were playing, the 2 ply version??

That or the tuning also was the bass drum filled with a pillow or blanket. I agree that when tuned too loose it lose it's character but at medium or tight tension, it make the bass drum real cannon ;-)

When I got there (I was the drumset co-ordinator; makes me feel like I am football coach), one quick look at the Aquarian SK II with only one ply remaining on a two ply head, was all I needed to know that this head wasn't going to last 12 hours of bashing. When the main co-ordinator came back with another SK II (I should of specified a Powerstroke 3), I tuned it up just like Bob Gatzen recommended in his video! Bob ought to know how to tune a drum! I tuned it fairly tight. This head really lagged behind the sound I get with my Powerstroke 3 and Punchpad! The sound from the bass drum behind the kit was non-existent!

I just don't understand why some people rave about these heads. I like Roy Burns and all but I just don't dig Aquarian heads.

And the bass drum was empty ? Although frrom my experience with these heads, I must tell you that these heads get their optimal sound after some playing . Myself I prefer the SKI vs the SKII but I respect your taste and choice. Taste is an undiscutable choice. Everything is in the ear of the beholder.

Try the new Suede Emperors from Remo. They aren't as "coated" as the other models but they do have a nice, smooth tone.

Yep, That is how the 2 ply Super Kick is. I don't care for it at all. The Super Kick 1 is a whole other head. I played Remo for many years but I have had it with their inconsistancy. I don't have that problem with Aquarian. You basically get good sound out of the box, no seating/ glue cracking bs.

I always put a 14"coated remo ambassdor on my snare,that's been the number1 snare head for years on my little kit(20"bass,10"tom & 14" floor tom) I put coated emperor's on my tom & floor tom & a coated powerstroke 3 on my bass drum.

I certainly respect your feelings on the inconsistency problem. I feel the same way about Vic Firth's sticks and let Cathy Firth know about it (in a nice way) at the NAMM show. At one time Remo's coated was extremely bad about flaking off. This was in 1999 or 2000. I was told that Remo got in trouble with the EPA and had to revamp the method of coating their heads. Whether this is true or not, I don't know. The only coated heads I currently use are the Ambassador on my snare. I love the way the clear ambassadors sound on my toms.

Anyway, yeah, it's your money and bass drum heads are ridiculously expensive!

Bass drum was empty....and it seems the general consensus is in favor of the SK I and I feel that it is similar to the Powerstroke 4 BD head. I just didn't know that I would need to tell the guy what to get, but that's what I get for sending a non-drummer to get a bass drum head!

it give a more warmer focused tone. If I was going (I'll probably do so soon) coated on the bass drum, I'd go with something really unmuffled but still with Aquarian, since their coating is little thicker, it will compensate for the muffling (something like Force I texture coated).

It seems there is a trend away from 2 ply heads on the bass drum. I wonder if it has anything to do with the widespread use of beater patches.
